Breast Augmentation Swelling And Recovery – Tips From Surgeon

Breast augmentation swelling is common. Your stitch lines will be covered with gauze. Initially your breasts may appear firm, swollen and appear to be sitting high on your chest. Wear a surgical bra or breast augmentation bra, that has no underwire and opens in the front, for protection and support.

After five to seven days, the gauze dressing will be removed and you should wear your surgical bra or breast augmentation bra continuously for several weeks.

Do not take diuretics without permission from your plastic surgeon. Sleep in a reclining position until the swelling goes down. This helps to move fluid away from the breast, which in turn reduces tension and pain in the breast.

As the swelling resolves and gravity comes into play, the implants will sink down slightly and assume a lower, more natural position. Minimize the movement of your arms, and bend from the knees only as needed. You may be able to resume work within a week or two after surgery, but aerobic activity involving running, jumping, or bouncing should be avoided for three to four weeks. Your surgeon is likely to use absorbable stitches which should dissolve in two to four weeks.

Bruising is rare, but if you get a bruise, do not be overly alarmed. But if the bruise does not recover and feels firm, see your doctor immediately. This may be a sign of hematoma, a pooling of blood which is trapped under the skin. If the hematoma is serious enough, your doctor will need to drain it. Therefore, to decrease your chances of getting hematoma, for two weeks before and after your breast augmentation procedure, avoid blood thinning drugs containing aspirin or ibuprofen, as well as Vitamin E and garlic supplements which may thin the blood.
