Breast Augmentation Without Using Breast Implants
The breast augmentation procedure which involves liposuctioning fat from the thighs or buttocks and injecting it into breasts to augment them, is generating excitement in the United States. Patients are equally thrilled as they potentially can augment their breasts without using breast implants. They want their breasts to look natural, and not hard or fake.
This kind of breast augmentation using liposuctioned fat offers three benefits:
- It trims fat where you do not want it
- It puts fat where you want it
- It totally eliminates the risk of an implant breaking or hardening.
However, the success of this procedure depends on the skill of the plastic surgeon. There is a concern that insufficient injected fat survive being transplanted because techniques for harvesting, refining and placing fat are not advanced enough.
There is a second concern that fat grafting could potentially interfere with breast cancer detection when the woman undergoes mammography. When the injected fat dies, calcifies and forms calcium deposits, radiologists may not be able to distinguish between the calcifications and the ones that may indicate breast cancer.
Breast augmentation surgeons, however, are confident that liposuctioned fat can now be a viable alternative to breast implants. After all, in recent years, fat injections have been used to correct irregularities from reconstructive breast surgery after a mastectomy or a lumpectomy.
The disadvantages that patients should be aware of include high expenses, lengthy procedures, and a fluctuating breast volume. Patients can easily undo the results of the procedure by simply losing weight after breast surgery. There could be potential complications if the breast augmentation surgeon doing this type of breast augmentation procedure is not skilled enough. Complications may include oil cysts, masses, nodules and scarring.
Dr Roger Khouri, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who has successfully done this procedure, explains more about the procedure in the video below:
