It’s easy to get caught up in comparing yourself to other people and thinking that your body isn’t good enough—but the truth is that everyone has different aspirations and different goals when it comes to surgery, so there’s no way for all of us to be satisfied with our results.

We hope you’re quite clear on the fact that you should never, ever, under any circumstances put yourself and your health in that kind of situation. That said, if you are considering plastic surgery, whether for health or cosmetic reasons, it’s not just sketchy basements that you need to be wary of.

First off, make sure your plastic surgeon is certified—and this is important—by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. “We’ve heard of ob-gyn doctors doing tummy tucks or breast augmentations; we’ve heard of ER doctors doing liposuctions,” says Raffi Hovsepian, M.D., an assistant clinical professor in the division of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of California-Irvine School of Medicine and co-director of the Newport Beach Aesthetic Surgery Fellow and Resident Training Program at the Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery Institute. “Yes, they’re physicians, but they haven’t had the long-term training as a plastic surgeon specific for those needs or those techniques or procedures.”
You’ll also want to find a physician who specializes in the area of plastic surgery you want, who can show you before-and-after photos that look like you, and who has positive reviews on Yelp and RealSelf, says Lisa Cassileth, M.D., clinical chief of the division of plastic surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and an assistant clinical professor at UCLA.

When you go in for your appointment, make sure you are incredibly clear with your surgeon about what you want and that he or she is sparklingly clear with you about what will go down during surgery. The doctor shouldn’t be determining everything that’s right for you, says Cassileth, and “when you meet that person, you should not proceed unless you feel comfortable with them.”

Bad scarring is typically caused by a genetic propensity to leave ugly scars, poor surgical design, or issues with post-operative recovery. Rating scars as good or poor is a very personal decision. One patient’s reaction to a scar could be very different from another patient’s reaction to the same scar. Few surgeons are willing to acknowledge subpar outcomes. I would advise seeking the advice of a different surgeon. Oftentimes, the issue is not the actual scar itself, but rather the poor outcome of prior surgery. It’s possible that the breast was elevated, but the lift wasn’t quite what you expected. A breast enlargement involving implants, elevating, or reduction of the breasts is a difficult procedure that could have unsatisfactory outcomes, especially in the hands of unskilled doctors. Always work with a plastic surgeon who is board qualified and skilled in the treatment you want done.
Does Breast Scarring Laser Scar Removal Work?
The topic of laser scar removal comes up frequently. It is hoped that focused laser therapy will either eliminate the skin’s outer layers or inspire new skin cells to heal the injured skin. Lasers aren’t the “holy grail” of scar management, sadly. At best, there are minor advantages to utilizing a laser to lessen the look of a scar. It’s a complete waste of time and money, to be honest.
Would Creams or Ointments Help Breast Scars?
Any lotion or ointment applied topically is unlikely to improve scars. When it comes to minimizing scars, silicone gel is just not comparable to silicone strips or tapes. Spending money on lotions and ointments that promise to fade scars is a waste.

I can guarantee you that having lovely breasts with barely noticeable scars is a far better option. When it comes to breasts, men are not particularly meticulous. They do not see the scars, only the great picture. Scarred but lovely breasts are acceptable.
What Are the Best Practices for Breast Scar Prevention?
There are primarily two techniques to prevent undesirable breast scarring. First, for four months following your treatment, wear silicone scar strips ten hours per day. There isn’t a replacement. The second is even more crucial: Choose a qualified plastic surgeon. The rest will fall into place if the surgeon is skilled and knowledgeable.
Is Breast Augmentation Dangerous
Risks associated with breast augmentation surgery include:
Anaesthesia dangers
Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) or other extremely uncommon malignancies in the breast capsule, like breast implant-associated squamous cell carcinoma, may develop after receiving a breast implant (BIA-SCC)
Bleeding
changes in the breast or nipple sensation
fluid encumbrance (seroma)
tight scar tissue growth around the implant (capsular contracture)
rupture or leaking of a hematoma implant
Infection
chronic discomfort
shabby scarring
Potential for a revision procedure
Skin wrinkling near the implant
Implant placement that is incorrect or flawed
Before you give your consent, all risks, including this ones, will be clearly disclosed. It’s crucial that you ask your plastic surgeon all of your questions up front.
Safety of breast implants
Breast implants that have received FDA approval have undergone rigorous testing to show their effectiveness and safety. Most women who get breast implants don’t have any significant side effects. However, there are risks associated with breast implants, including systemic symptoms known as breast implant illness (BII), which some patients attribute to their implants and can include fatigue, “brain fog,” muscle or joint pain, and rash. Breast implants are also linked to anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), squamous cell carcinoma (BIA-SCC), and systemic symptoms known as breast neoplasms. Patients should speak with a board-certified plastic surgeon if complications arise so that they can be treated right away. Similarly, a patient should speak with her plastic surgeon if she plans to have her breast implants removed for any reason.
Other crucial factors
Breast implants are not guaranteed to last a lifetime, and replacement surgery for one or both implants may be necessary in the future.
Regular breast exams are necessary to monitor your breast health and assess the status of your breast implants after breast augmentation.
The FDA advises having an MRI or ultrasound done on your breast implants five to six years after the installation of silicone implants and then every two to three years after that.
Over your lifetime, enhanced breasts may change in appearance due to pregnancy, weight loss, and menopause.
