After childbirth or significant weight loss, many women struggle with loose skin hanging over their pubic bone. This excess skin, which often cannot be improved with diet and exercise alone, can be frustrating and impact self-esteem. Additionally, the appearance of stretch marks can further exacerbate the problem. While many individuals may feel discouraged by these physical changes, there is a solution that can help address these concerns: a tummy tuck.

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening the abdominal muscles. This procedure can help create a smoother, firmer abdominal profile and improve the appearance of stretch marks. However, it is important to note that a tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss and should be considered after reaching a stable weight.

When considering a tummy tuck, it is essential to do thorough research and consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon. During the consultation, the surgeon will evaluate your overall health and discuss your expectations and goals for the procedure. They will also explain the different techniques that can be used, such as full tummy tucks, mini tummy tucks, and extended tummy tucks, and help determine which approach is best for you.

To ensure the best results possible, there are several important factors to consider before undergoing a tummy tuck:

1. Choose a highly skilled and experienced plastic surgeon who specializes in tummy tucks.
2. Follow all pre-operative and post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon to promote proper healing and minimize complications.
3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a balanced diet to help maintain your results long-term.
4. Understand that while a tummy tuck can improve the appearance of loose skin and stretch marks, it may not completely eliminate them.

In conclusion, a tummy tuck can be a life-changing procedure for those struggling with loose skin and stretch marks after childbirth or weight loss. By following these guidelines and working closely with a qualified plastic surgeon, you can achieve the best possible results and regain confidence in your appearance.

Getting the Best Tummy Tuck Results

As a popular body-shaping surgery at our San Francisco practice, a tummy tuck is designed to repair weakened abdominal muscles and get rid of saggy skin. Yet not all tummy tucks are created equal.

To get the best outcomes possible from a tummy tuck, finding a skilled, highly qualified plastic surgeon is a requirement rather than a luxury.

In a nutshell, find a surgeon who can help you make well-informed decisions, and recommend the appropriate tummy tuck variation based on your current needs and existing physique.

Jane is a 28-year-old student and mother of one who was unhappy with her flabby belly following childbirth. After hearing a radio ad promising a safe, quick, and minimally invasive procedure that would remove her belly fat and tighten her sagging skin — two major issues that Jane has been struggling with — Jane decided to check it out. It turned out to be an ad about Smartlipo laser liposuction by a national liposuction chain.

Frustrated with the way her tummy looked even after eating clean and a consistent exercise routine, she eventually signed up for their consultation.

On her first visit, she was seen by a ‘patient counselor’ who performed a quick assessment, and assured her that she was a good candidate for the procedure. The counselor offered her a “special,” including $1000-off if she signed up that day.

Of course, the offer was “too good to pass up,” so she signed up for the procedure on the spot.

Jane didn’t meet her surgeon until the morning of the surgery, but he seemed like a nice guy. During the procedure, despite local anesthesia, she felt like she was being stabbed, even though the patient counselor had assured her that the procedure wouldn’t hurt.

In spite of the pain, Jane managed to get through the procedure. Unfortunately, the SmartLipo results turned out poor. After waiting almost six months to heal, Jane’s abdominal skin ended up uneven with horrible-looking dimples.

She went back to the clinic that performed the procedure, but was told that she was not an ideal candidate in the first place because of loose skin. Jane was upset that there was no mention of this when she initially talked to the patient counselor.

Sadly, this happens more frequently than you would think.

Jane eventually found out about Dr. Fan and came in for a consultation at our San Francisco practice.

Dr. Fan listened to her concerns, reviewed her history, performed a thorough examination, and personally spent over an hour talking with her about her options. She decided to undergo the recommended tummy tuck and was ultimately thrilled with the results!

What Makes A Great Tummy Tuck Surgeon?

If there’s one key lesson to glean from Jane’s story, it would have to be the importance of finding a reputable, board-certified plastic surgeon who can give you an honest appraisal of your condition and the necessary treatment rather than trusting in heavily marketed, unproven technology and non-expert doctors.

So how do you spot a well-versed, expert plastic surgeon from the inexperienced?

Four Things to Look For:

1. Board-Certification in Plastic Surgery

Find a surgeon who is Board Certified in Plastic Surgery by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Board certified plastic surgeons are the only doctors who have been rigorously educated, trained, and certified to perform cosmetic surgery of the face, breasts, and body. Evaluate your surgeon for outstanding credentials and track record in producing stellar results specific to the type of surgery that you’re interested in.

Be wary of anybody who calls themselves a “cosmetic surgeon” or any doctor who is not specifically board certified in plastic surgeon.

2. A Plastic Surgeon Who Performs A Full Range of Tummy Contouring Procedures

Most patients with sagging tummies need a tummy tuck, but others may be candidates for alternative treatments such as liposuction and/or CoolSculpting.

The only doctor who is qualified to give you a full and honest opinion as to what YOU need is a plastic surgeon who performs the full spectrum of tummy contouring treatments (ie. nonsurgical treatments like CoolSculpting, minimally invasive treatments like liposuction, and surgical treatments like tummy tucks).

Doctors who do not perform tummy tucks (eg. doctors who only perform liposuction, or doctors or medical spas that only perform non-invasive fat reduction treatments) do not have the expertise to give you a qualified assessment. Additionally, they have a vested incentive to steer you away from a tummy tuck because they don’t offer that service.

3. A Genuine Concern For Your Health, Needs, and Goals

Go for the surgeon who takes the time to understand your needs and preferences. A great tummy tuck surgeon will help you get the results you want rather than what they want.

To accomplish the best results possible without compromising safety, the surgeon of your choice should be thoughtful, detail-oriented, and have a keen sense of aesthetic artistry.

Unlike Jane’s unfortunate experience with the liposuction chain post-surgery, a surgeon who genuinely cares for your safety will stick with you even after the procedure.

4. Technical Finesse and Artistry Rolled Into One

As a prospective tummy tuck patient, take the time to find a surgeon who is a true artist and much more than just a technician. Renowned plastic surgeons have an innate eye for beauty and technical finesse in body sculpting procedures. Attention to the smallest of details and a commitment to excellence can make all the difference between an OK result and a GREAT result.

No Pressure with the Expert Care that an Experienced Surgeon Can Provide

Deciding to undergo abdominoplasty is a major step. It’s important that you are comfortable with the procedure, the expected results, and any complications that may occur. Your consultation will be compassionate, based on facts and evidence, and completely tailored to your needs.

Dr. Salomon has been through similar consultations with hundreds of patients in the past. His empathy surrounding the procedure and personal concerns will put you at ease as you make your decision. The exact procedure, how much to remove, and the scar location are all important decisions to be made.

The upsides and downsides of every option will be explained in detail, and you will be given time to come to an informed decision.

If you want to be able to wear a swimsuit following your surgery, you may want to have incisions made lower so that any visible scarring is concealed when wearing a two-piece suit or even underwear. Swimsuit styles change with the years. Current trends may influence where you choose to have your scar location.

Having a Tummy Tuck After Pregnancy

The skin may settle and tighten on its own, but the extent of this is minimal and age is a factor. After pregnancy, it is impossible for your skin to naturally return to the state it was previously in. Loose skin is only one of the problems following pregnancy. You will likely have developed stretch marks that you want to remove. Pregnancy can also put pressure on the abdominal wall, which then separates the rectus muscles that go from just below your rib cage, all the way down to your pubic bone.

Exercise can tighten the paired rectus muscles, but it will not fuse them again. Once there is a gap, you may look bloated, even when you are maintaining a healthy weight range. A tummy tuck can connect muscle tissues back together, so you can achieve the taught and trim appearance that you once had.

Abdominoplasty After Weight Loss

If you were previously overweight, then your skin may have stretched to the point where it is now loose and hanging from your abdomen. Even as you regain your health and tighten your muscles, that stretched, excess skin will remain.

It is becoming more common for people to visit a plastic surgeon following extreme weight loss. Dr. Salomon can perform abdominoplasty to remove excess skin and sculpt a figure that reflects your new lifestyle. Liposuction may also be used to remove stubborn fat from spot areas.

As one of the best abdominoplasty surgeons in Miami, Dr. Salomon has extensive experience performing tummy tucks to restore the body after weight loss. Throughout his career, the doctor has worked with eminent surgeons in the field of plastic surgery and body sculpting. Correcting your image is his specialty. Meticulous surgical techniques and years of experience will leave you with the body that you have worked hard to create.

There are some important factors that need to be considered before the procedure. Skin that is stretched and damaged from being overweight or obese is typically in poorer condition than skin that has been stretched following a pregnancy. Technical issues such as the direction and severity of skin pull need to be considered. It is absolutely essential that you only trust your surgery to a highly experienced abdominoplasty surgeon in Miami.

Patients who have achieved massive weight loss may also have other medical issues that need to be considered before a surgical plan is developed.

Problems that will be considered include:

  • Skin rashes.
  • Sleep apnea.
  • Chronic inflammation.
  • Heart disease.
  • Nutritional deficiencies.

If you need sculpting or a tummy tuck following weight loss, it’s time to book your consultation at Dr. Salomon’s Plastic Surgery & Med Spa.

What Should You Expect When Having Abdominoplasty in Miami?

Most procedures take between one and three hours to complete. A general anesthetic is used so that you are kept unconscious, comfortable, and pain-free during the procedure.

  • complete tummy tuck will normally require an incision that runs from hip to hip, along with an incision at the navel. Excess skin and troublesome fat is removed. A complete abdominoplasty may also include tightening and rebinding of abdominal muscles, depending on your unique circumstances.
  • mini tummy tuck comes with less downtime, and post-operative discomfort is also minimized. This can be used to remove a moderate amount of skin and excess fat.

Recovering from a Miami Tummy Tuck

As a significant surgical procedure, recovery is not trivial. It can take two or three weeks to get back to your daily routine. In most cases, you will stay in a recovery center with care and observation for the first one or two nights following surgery.

Your comfort and recovery are a priority for Dr. Jhonny Salomon. Because each case differs, you will be advised on what to expect in your initial consultation. Everything from the surgical procedure to the anesthesiologist process, and even specific medications, will be discussed.

Do You Need a Tummy Tuck Consultation in Miami?

Dr. Jhonny Salomon is a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in a range of procedures, including abdominoplasty in Miami.

Dr. Salomon and his team at the Plastic Surgery & Med Spa are standing by to give you compassionate and empathetic support as you begin this important journey to achieve the body that you desire.

How large and noticeable is the scar afterward?
Dr. Salomon works carefully to ensure that the scarring from the tummy tuck procedure is minimal. Depending on the amount of skin being removed, the scar can range from the size of c-section to the full length from between the hips. The incision is placed low enough to ensure the scarring is able to be easily concealed by normal undergarments. Although avoiding the scar is impossible, there are many post-surgery techniques and procedures available to minimize the appearance.

Are there any potential side effects or complications from the surgery?
As with any form of surgery, complications arising from a tummy tuck are possible, but very rare. Some of the common side effects are scarring and bruising. On rare occasions, patients have reported numbness and swelling of the treated area. Extreme complications are blood clots and infection.

How large and noticeable is the scar afterward?
Scars from a tummy tuck generally run the full length between a patient’s hips, but these scars are placed very low on the stomach so that they can be covered by typical undergarments. The scar will fade over time, but it’s likely that it will never entirely disappear.

Are there any potential side effects or complications from the surgery?
Complications arising from a tummy tuck procedure are very rare, but there are some risks and side effects to be aware of. Bruising and scarring may result from the procedure, and a small number of patients experience numbness, blood clots, swelling, or infection. An even smaller number experience skin loss not related to the surgery.

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is one of the most transformative procedures that plastic surgeons can perform. It is a procedure that can be used to contour the abdomen to a much more youthful, healthy, and desirable state. It involves removing excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen, repositioning the belly button, and tightening up the abdominal musculature. It may often be performed with liposuction or sometimes in conjunction with other procedures such as Breast Augmentation and/or Breast Lift, like in the Mommy Makeover.

There are three main components that the tummy tuck treats:

Excess Skin

Pregnancy is a beautiful thing, but unfortunately there are often some trade-offs that women must experience. The abdominal tissue is designed to stretch and expand during pregnancy, but unfortunately it does not tend to retract to its previous position. Postpartum women are then usually left with loose skin, mostly in the lower abdominal region below the belly button. This can be accompanied by stretch marks as well. Even if the patient is at their ideal body weight, and in good physical shape, this skin will often never improve on its own. A Tummy Tuck helps to surgically remove this excess tissue and flatten and tighten the lower abdominal wall*.

Excess Fat

Many women may also notice that as they age, they just can’t get rid of that excess fat around the lower abdomen and belly button. Even if they are in great physical shape and eat a healthy diet, that stubborn fat wont budge. In these cases, a Tummy Tuck with some liposuction can help to remove the excess fat in those stubborn areas to create a more proportioned shape and contour to the abdomen*.

Weak Musculature

Weight gain, age, and pregnancy can all lead to a wearing of the abdominal wall. If this weakening progresses and the “six pack” muscles begin to separate, it is referred to as Rectus Diastasis. No amount of sit-ups or crunches will ever correct this. The only way to correct this problem is through a Tummy Tuck, where we surgically repair the muscle separation and improve and flatten the upper abdominal contour*.

The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is one in good health without significant medical problems. They should have reasonable expectations of outcome and understand the potential risks and complications that may occur. Women who have not had children, and those that are done having children are both excellent candidates if they understand the nuances of their individual situation. For optimal results, women should be close to their ideal body weight. Patients who are considerably overweight are at increased risks of complications and dissatisfaction with their overall results*.

Consultation

During your consultation, you will meet with Dr. Arslanian and his staff and have the opportunity to discuss your individual situation as well as your concerns and aesthetic goals. Dr. Arslanian will will take a thorough history and perform a complete examination checking for diastasis and hernias. Photos will be taken to help Dr. Arslanian point out certain things and explain his approach to tummy tuck. If you are deemed a good candidate, he will discuss the various options for tummy tuck and make sure you are happy with your decision. He will also show you photos of other patients before and afters to give you a reasonable idea of expectations*. After answering all your questions, you will then sit down with the surgical coordinator to discuss timing, pricing, and any other questions you might have.

Special Considerations

Mini-Abdominoplasty

There are some patients that have very minimal excess fat and skin, but still have the muscle weakness that requires repair. In this technique, a smaller incision can usually be utilized, and the muscle repair and skin excision can then be performed. This usually does not require moving the belly button to another location.

Body Lift

If you have experienced massive weight loss after Weight Loss surgery, or on your own through diet and exercise, Dr. Arslanian can help guide you to the appropriate treatment. This may involve performing a typically tummy tuck, or may require a circumferential procedure such as a body lift or belt lipectomy in order to address the entire trunk area. Patients who are candidates typically have excess loose skin not only on the front of the belly but also in the hips, flanks, and back.

Liposuction

Many patients will combine a tummy tuck with liposuction. Even though the front of the abdomen does not respond well to liposuction, the flanks, hips, lower and upper back, arms and thighs all do*. Often a tummy tuck will be performed to address the front of the abdomen, and then additional liposuction can be performed in other areas to produce a total body transformation*.

Mommy Makeover

It is very common for a tummy tuck to be performed with breast rejuvenation in postpartum women. The process of transforming the post-pregnancy body to the pre-pregnancy body is coined “The Mommy Makeover.” Rather than a specific procedure, he is a combination of different procedures all with the same goal of transformation.

Male Tummy Tuck

Men are excellent candidates as well. Men do not have to deal with the effects of pregnancy, but age and weight gain and weight loss can all lead to a less than desirable mid-section. The procedure can be performed to remove excess skin and fat and also improve the musculature if needed.

Preparation

Prior to surgery you will be given instructions on the day, time and location of your procedure. You will be given your prescriptions that Dr. Arslanian prescribes, and all of your paperwork including consent forms will be signed. In some cases you may need to obtain medical clearance from your physician or specialist, and possibly meet with the anesthesiologist and undergo additional lab work depending on your medical issues and personal situation. Current smokers will unfortunately not be offered a tummy tuck as the complication rate is considerably higher. Dr. Arslanian can discuss options for smoking cessation so that you may still be a candidate for the procedure.

Procedure

The procedure will be performed as an outpatient in an accredited surgery center with a board certified anesthesiologist in the safest conditions possible. The surgery will be performed under general anesthesia. Pre-operative markings will typically be made the morning of surgery.

After you are asleep, Dr. Arslanian will start by making his incision, which typically will be very low in order to hide the scar in your underwear or bikini line. He will then lift up the abdominal skin and fat as a flap. The belly button will then be released from the surrounding skin and a narrow tunnel will be created in midline almost to the chest. Dr. Arslanian will then decide if you need a muscle repair and will perform that repair to the appropriate tension required. The excess skin and fat will then be removed and the incisions will be closed. Drains will be placed under the skin to allow for fluid removal. Local Anesthetic will be administered directly into the muscle to allow for post-operative pain relief. A new belly button hole will then be created and your belly button will then be brought out and sewn into place. Bandages and either a garment or binder will be placed and you will be transferred to the recovery room after awaking.

Recovery

You will go home the same day of surgery and rest. You will need to modify your sleeping and sitting positioning. There will be some tension on the incision closure, and a modified “beach chair” position will be required. This means keeping both the head/back and legs/knees bent and supported with pillows in order to remove any tension on the repair.

You will be walking the first day after surgery but will likely need to stay bent over slightly for the first 1-2 weeks until the skin begins to stretch enough for you stand upright. Moving around will be important to prevent blood clots. You will also start on a blood thinner the day after surgery and continue that for approximately 10 days to minimize the chances of developing a blood clot in your legs.

You will likely have two drains in place and will be given detailed instructions on how to manage them and record the output. They will typically be removed at 10-14 days after surgery, which is almost painless and done in the office*.

You will be able to return to light work duty within 2 weeks if you have a desk or computer jo*. You will not be able to lift anything heavy for at least 6-8 weeks*. You can slowly increase your activity and begin exercising again at the discretion of Dr. Arslanian based on your progress and individual healing. At 3 months you will be able to resume ALL activities including heavy lifting, sit-ups and crunches, and full cardio exercise*.

Results

Patients can expect most of the swelling to be resolved by 3 months, but 10-15% of the swelling can persist to 6 or even 12 month*. Your scar will typically begin to improve and fade after 6 weeks and can take at least a year to fade completely*. A scar control regiment will be recommended to you as well in order to help minimize scarring from the procedure.

Price

The cost of your procedure/treatment will vary depending on the extent of your individual case and whether you choose to add any additional procedures. We would be more than happy to give you a detailed customized quote when you schedule a consultation with Dr. Arslanian.

how to choose a plastic surgeon for tummy tuck

Your choice of cosmetic surgeon will be a choice you live with for years, if not your entire life. A successful procedure will make you feel more like yourself and give you greater confidence for years to come. On the other hand, ending up in the hands of an inexperienced surgeon increases your chances of having poor results, which can lead to additional costs, time, and heartache.

Finding a board certified cosmetic surgeon who has plenty of experience in your procedure of choice is critical to getting the results you desire.

Get help vetting doctors you interview by downloading our cosmetic surgeon comparison checklist now, or read on to get the details.

In this video, ABCS diplomate Dr. Kevin Duplechain talks about what’s important to look for during your search for the right cosmetic surgeon for you.

1. Make sure the cosmetic surgeon is board certified

Many people think they can depend on state medical boards to ensure that surgeons are qualified to perform the procedures they advertise, but that fact is that the government does not require a surgeon to be specifically trained in the procedures they offer. This problem is most acute in the area of cosmetic surgery, as many doctors with general surgery or other medical training hop on the cosmetic surgery bandwagon in pursuit of greater profits.

Ask each surgeon you interview: are you board certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery?

Our view is that patients need a dependable way to know if their surgeon is properly trained and experienced in cosmetic surgery. That’s why we at the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) formed a board exclusively dedicated to cosmetic surgeons’ education, training, and certification.

2. Confirm the surgeon’s experience in the specific procedures you want

Each area of cosmetic surgery requires different skills: you can imagine how operating on a nose with bone, cartilage, and breathing passages would be quite different from operating on a breast, which is primarily comprised of soft tissue. Given this, cosmetic surgeons can have subspecialties within the field. Choose a surgeon who is board certified in cosmetic surgery and has substantial experience in the procedure you are considering.

3. Choose a surgeon whose aesthetic sense appeals to you

We all know that what one person finds beautiful may be unattractive to another. For this reason, you can’t just trust a friend’s recommendation or solely depend on the cosmetic surgeon’s experience. You need to look carefully at the results for each surgeon you interview.

4. Pay attention to how the surgeon and staff make you feel

Surgery is a big deal, and there can be curves in the path to your new look. You need to feel 100% comfortable with your cosmetic surgeon and their support team. Choose a cosmetic surgeon whom you like and trust completely with your safety and results.

5. Find out about the operating facility

Your safety during surgery depends in large part on the anesthetist and the operating facility. Accredited operating rooms include key life support systems just in case something goes wrong.

6. Customer service matters too!

You want to be sure you are being served and treated well. Much of this will be obvious a few minutes after you walk in the door of cosmetic surgeon’s office.

What BMI is too high for tummy tuck

Tummy tuck is a very common plastic surgery procedure. It’s been around for a while and it’s very popular. Not only because it can remove excess skin after a weight loss and pregnancy, provide better physical appearance, but it can also boost your confidence and improve your mental state.

The skin that the plastic surgeon will reduce is the type of skin that you can’t get rid of no matter how much you diet or exercise. Women usually get this type of skin after pregnancies, C-sections, weight loss or due to ageing.

Have they told you that you’re too fat for tummy tuck?

A lot of women visit Dr. Kotoske after consulting with other plastic surgeons, who tell them that they are too fat for abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery). In some instances, this might be true, but there should be a better way to break the news to someone that they are not yet eligible for this type of procedure.

Since not everyone is their ideal BMI and weight, instead of breaking the bad news, plastic surgeons should encourage patients to create a proactive plan which will help them to reach their desired weight and get ready for a tummy tuck.

Ideal weight and BMI for an abdominoplasty

Your BMI is the ration between your body height and body weight. Body Mass Index (BMI) can tell you about your overall fitness based on your height. You can easily calculate your BMI online, as there are many online apps.

BMI is calculated by dividing your current weight with your height squared. So if you’re 210 lbs and you’re 5 ft and 8”, your BMI would be 31.9

According to science, the recommended and healthy BMI for an adult should range between 20-25. So if your BMI is under, you’re considered to be underweight and if it’s above, you’re considered to be overweight.

But why is this so important? In order to get the best results from a tummy tuck procedure, you need to be your ideal weight and BMI. A BMI that is less than 30 is considered to be ideal for a tummy tuck procedure. Of course, you can still have the surgery even if you’re overweight and still get good results.

If you’re BMI is 30 or higher

Having a higher BMI doesn’t mean that you’re no longer eligible for the procedure. It can still be performed but the results might not be as good as for an ideal patient. So before committing to the surgery, see if you can make an extra effort in reaching your ideal weight and BMI.

Higher BMI not only can hinder the end results of the procedure and dissatisfaction, but it also means a risky procedure. If you didn’t reach your ideal weight now, after the procedure you might lose some additional weight which will result in more lose skin. You can of course do a second procedure, but in order to avoid revisions, we recommend doing the procedure once, with an ideal BMI.

If you believe that you’re an ideal candidate for a Tummy Tuck procedure, make sure to contact Dr. Kotoske and schedule an appointment.
