You’ve probably heard of breast reduction surgery, but what does it involve?
Breast reduction, also called “reduction mammoplasty,” is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat, skin, and breast tissue to make your breasts smaller. It can also reduce the nipple size (if desired). This procedure can be done on women who have large breasts due to genetic reasons or due to weight gain or pregnancy.
The purpose of breast reduction is to help improve your self-image and body image by reducing your physical discomfort caused by large breasts. Breast reduction is often done in combination with breast lift surgery (mastopexy) if you have sagging breasts. This combination is called “breast reduction mastopexy.”

Importance of Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction is a surgery designed to decrease the size of the breast. The procedure can alleviate physical and mental discomfort that may be the result of overly large breasts. Dr. Bajaj is well-known for her cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery skills. When you choose breast reduction, you want a surgeon who not only understands the aesthetics, but also the anatomy. Dr. Bajaj will consult with you to determine if breast reduction surgery can achieve the results you desire. Dr. Bajaj prides herself on truly listening to what you want and providing an honest recommendation.
During your consultation with Dr. Bajaj at her Oklahoma office, you will determine if breast reduction surgery will achieve the results that you desire. You can discuss any problems you may experience due to the large size of your breasts. A thorough examination will then be performed, and a combination of her findings and your aesthetic wishes will allow her to develop an individualized procedure plan for you. If you are considering breast reduction surgery and have either health concerns related to your large breasts or just desire smaller, more comfortable breasts, Dr. Bajaj and her staff are eager to speak with you about the benefits of a Breast Reduction.
Prior to your breast reduction surgery, we may ask you to obtain a pre-op mammogram if you are over the age of 40 or are due for your annual examination. You may also be asked to complete other medical tests and examinations. Additionally, you may be asked to avoid certain medications (such as aspirin and some anti-inflammatories) in the 7-10 days preceding your surgery. Following surgery, arrange for a family member or friend to drive you home from your procedure. It is important to know that arm range and motion may be limited for some time post-surgery. Have important items at counter height, no where you have to reach too high to retrieve. Your home should be stocked with washcloths, ice, and gauze during your recovery period.
Breast Reduction surgery is typically performed under a general anesthetic (meaning that you are asleep for the procedure) and as an outpatient (meaning that you will go home following your procedure). The surgical procedure will take approximately 2-3 hours to perform.
Although a Breast Reduction can be performed as a procedure on its own, an ancillary procedure can greatly enhance the results. To determine if you would benefit from an additional procedure, schedule a consultation with Dr. Bajaj at her Oklahoma City location and she will gladly assess your needs.
Tummy Tuck Procedure
Sometimes referred to as a Mommy Makeover, any breast procedure can be performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty. This option is popular among moms who have recently given birth and want to restore their pre-pregnancy bodies. A tummy tuck procedure tightens the abdominal wall while creating a slim, contoured waistline.
Liposuction is a procedure that removes fat deposits through means of suctioning. In rare cases, Liposuction can be used as an aiding tool in a breast reduction procedure. Dr. Bajaj will determine if this method is appropriate for you. Alternatively, liposuction can be performed on other areas of the body during your breast reduction such as the abdomen or thighs.
The cost of your breast reduction will depend on your unique needs. If you plan on going through your health insurance plan, you will be responsible for your co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses as stated in your health insurance policy. However, if you opt to go the cosmetic route, the cost of the procedure ranges between $8500.00-$12000.00; this cost includes surgeon’s fees, anesthesia fees, facility fees, pre-and post-operative care, and your post-operative bra. Cost also varies if you opt to receive other procedures in addition to your Breast Reduction. At your consultation, you will receive a detailed quote if you opt to pursue a breast reduction cosmetically; you will have the opportunity to meet with our insurance coordinator if you opt to go through your health insurance.

How does it work?
The surgery is always customized for each patient. Dr. James (Jim) Lowe uses several different techniques. Before your breast reduction, Dr. Lowe will evaluate your healthy history, age, breast size, symptoms, body type and skin quality. Dr. Lowe can develop a tailored plan for your breast reduction surgery.
Surgery takes 2-4 hours under a general anesthetic. With a T-shaped or anchor shaped incision, the doctor removes excess fatty breast tissue using liposuction. Glandular tissue may also be removed and the breast skin can be tightened to elevate the breast position.
What happens after breast reduction?
After breast reduction, we will send you home with specific instructions to follow. You will probably be given a supportive bra to wear for several weeks as well as medications to help manage pain. It’s common for patients to experience some swelling, aching and changes in skin sensation as they recover from breast reduction.
