Jessica Simpson Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure performed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area. It’s also called a “abdominoplasty.”

If you’re considering a tummy tuck, it’s important to understand what your options are. There are several different procedures available, each with their own pros and cons.

Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen, while liposuction (also known as lipoplasty) removes fat only. Liposuction alone may be sufficient for some patients who are looking for a smaller waistline or flatter stomach, but it can’t achieve the same results as a tummy tuck because it doesn’t address the excess skin that can be left behind after weight loss.

In general, liposuction is less invasive than tummy tucks because it requires smaller incisions; however, there is some swelling after surgery which may last longer than with other procedures. On the flip side, many patients find that they require multiple treatments over time to see sustained results from liposuction alone.

Jessica Simpson Tummy Tuck

In her new memoir, Open Book, the 39-year-old singer recalls a particular low point in her decades-long struggle with body image. This came in 2015 after she had given birth to two of her three children — Maxwell, 7, and Ace, 6 — with her husband, Eric Johnson. The couple has since welcomed a daughter, 10-month-old Birdie.

“I was so ashamed of my body at this point that I wouldn’t let Eric see me without a white T-shirt on,” Simpson writes. “I had sex with it on and even showered with it on. I couldn’t bear to look at myself.”

Because of this, Simpson decided to get a partial tummy tuck. In a recent interview with ET, which will air in full during Tuesday night’s episode of Entertainment Tonight, Simpson opens up about her decision.

“That was after I lost a ton of weight and I had skin and stretch marks because I had two babies back-to-back, 14 months apart,” she said, adding that she had “gained so much weight” during her pregnancies.

Despite her want for a tummy tuck, that plan was initially shot down by her doctor, who was concerned over her liver levels. Simpson’s levels were high at the time due to her alcohol consumption, so much so that the doctor said to her, “You could die.”

“I told Eric. We were in a sort of shared spiral, both of us in denial about how much we were drinking,” she writes of telling her husband of the doctor’s comment. “I’m sure we were wasted when we talked about it.”

Despite the medical warning, Simpson decided to go ahead with the procedure, even opting to undergo a second, more intensive surgery when she wasn’t happy with the first results.

“There was a sense that something was going to go wrong from the get-go, even though I stopped drinking to prepare,” she writes. “The day of the surgery, Eric was puking his guts out because he was so nervous.”

“The surgery took two hours longer than planned… It did not go well,” she continues. “I got an infection — colitis — and was vomiting so much I thought I was going to bust my sutures. My mom and Eric were so worried. They had to rush me to Cedars, and I secretly stayed there for nine days. Doctors talked seriously about me needing a blood transfusion.”

The experience, she writes, was “so hard on Eric, who was convinced he should have talked me out of going through with the surgery.”

“Eric loved me at any size or shape, even if I couldn’t,” she adds.

The tummy tucks were one in a long line of things Simpson had done to alter her body since she was told to lose 10 to 15 pounds when she was 17 years old. At the time, Simpson writes that she “immediately went on an extremely sick diet, and started taking diet pills,” the latter of which she would continue for “the next 20 years.”

As her fame rose, Simpson was encouraged to show more and more skin, told to get “Janet Jackson abs,” and given a trainer. The pressure got so great at one point that she “would draw a six-pack” on herself with an eye shadow pencil.

She later started the Atkins diet. “Off the diet, I obsessed over how I looked 24/7; on the diet, I was also hyper focused on food. It made me nervous,” she writes. “My anxiety had something to hold on to, and instead of examining my emotions, I could just block them out by focusing on carb counts and waist sizes. If I focused on controlling my outward appearance, I could avoid thinking about my emotions and fears.”

Within a few years, she was down to 103 pounds. “Everyone went on about how great I looked, but I couldn’t enjoy it because I was so freaking hungry,” she writes. “When I ate anything, I yelled at myself, asking why I was getting in my own way and why I hadn’t gone to the gym.”

She went on to up her dosage of diet pills ahead of her 2002 wedding to Nick Lachey, before getting in the “best shape of my life” to play Daisy Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard a few years later.

“I saw Daisy Duke on the screen, and then just the teeny tiniest stomach shadow of Jessica,” she writes. “I was in the best shape of my life, and I didn’t appreciate it, but also it just shows the absurdity of how we always find something to criticize about ourselves.”

A few years later, Simpson’s body was in the spotlight again, this time when she performed in a sleeveless black bodysuit top, high-waisted blue jeans, and a Fendi leopard-print belt, an outfit that “started a decade-long international discussion about my body” and made “a dysmorphia set in.”

“I had created a gold-standard Jessica, the ‘before’ for every ‘Is she fat or is she thin?’ story for the rest of my career,” Simpson writes of the result of starring as Daisy Duke. “The fact that I was that skinny and that I was deemed overweight still frightens me.”

Jessica Simpson: so fresh and so clean?

Not so much.

The singer, 29, admits in an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show to air Wednesday that she only brushes her teeth “maybe three times a week.”

Why?

“Because my teeth are so white and I don’t like them to feel too slippery but I do use Listerine and I do floss everyday,” she explains. “But I don’t brush them every day.”

“My lips just slide all over the place….I can’t catch up with my mouth,” she continues. “I need a little coating….”

Instead, she’ll “use a shirt or something” to scrub her chompers clean.

“I know it’s gross but I always have fresh breath,” she swears. “It’s really weird but I have great breath.”

Maybe that explains why the Vh1 reality star is still single. Although she says she’s actively looking for her next guy on the down low.

“I mingle around very privately,” she tells DeGeneres. “I have ways in and out of my house and certain places that I go that are private just so I can have a normal life. I’m still out there and bring normal.”

After very public splits with John Mayer and Tony Romo, she still says it “doesn’t really matter” if her next guy is famous or not.

Her only requirements: “They definitely have to understand my life and what I put up with and what I deal with.  Being scrutinized publicly… [that] can definitely make or break a relationship and you have to have that strong foundation… so I have to have somebody that understands that kind of lifestyle.”

on Thursday revealed the recipe for getting her body in tip-top shape after embarking on a weight loss journey.

The singer, 41, left little to the imagination in a new Instagram post in which she showed off her bikini body in a colorful two-piece.

“I have gained and lost 100lbs 3x so I never thought this moment could or would happen, but I’m finally spring breakin’ wearin’ a BIKINI!!!!!!” Simpson captioned the post.

The fashion designer went on to list what it took to get the results she wanted: “Hard work Determination Self Love.”

The mother of three revealed she let out “a good proud cry today.”

In recent years, Simpson has been open with her fans about her journeys of losing weight and getting sober.

After welcoming her third child, a baby girl named Birdie Mae in March 2019, the singer dropped 100 pounds over the course of a year.

Speaking of her weight loss journey, her personal trainer Harley Pasternak recently revealed to E! News, “This particular baby No. 3 was … I think she commented to the press that she tipped the scales at 240 lbs, that’s not coming from me, she mentioned that in a post. So, we had our work cut out for us and perhaps more so on this baby than the others.”

“It had to be more than just getting back from her baby weight, but how do I keep whatever I am doing now forever. That’s why we are not a big fan of doing any extreme diet or radical forms of exercise,” he added.

Pasternak worked with Simpson’s doctor to create a sustainable meal plan of lean protein and vegetables. She eats three meals a day and has two snacks like “parmesan green beans and a handful of almonds.”

Simpson’s workout plan included walking 14,000 steps a day and full-body workouts.

Simpson also spoke about becoming sober in a recent interview with Entrepreneur. She shared that her subconscious played a major role in both her personal and professional life.

“When I stopped drinking, it was because I had stopped hearing the voice I really trusted, and I was lost without her,” Simpson told the outlet.

The “A Public Affair” singer then referenced a hard moment in her life, which she wrote about in her memoir, “Open Book.” She recalled a night during a Halloween party where she had a couple of drinks and was unable to dress her children.

“I was terrified of letting them see me in that shape,” Simpson wrote in her memoir. “I am ashamed to say that I don’t know who got them into their costumes that night.”

Since that night, Simpson remained sober, celebrating four years of sobriety Nov. 1. To acknowledge the milestone, she opened up to her Instagram followers that day.

“This person in the early morning of Nov. 1, 2017, is an unrecognizable version of myself,” Simpson captioned her post, alongside an image of her from the day she stopped drinking.

“I had so much self-discovery to unlock and explore. I knew in this very moment I would allow myself to take back my light, show victory over my internal battle of self-respect and brave this world with piercing clarity,” she added.

Jessica Simpson has come a long way from her pop music days of singing hit songs like “I Wanna Love You Forever” and sharing her early years of fame in front of reality television cameras on MTV’s Newlyweds. Today, Simpson, 41, is leading one of the most sought-after fashion empires in the world with The Jessica Simpson Collection.

Created in 2005 by Simpson, The Jessica Simpson Collection has grown into a popular destination over these past 17 years for women and juniors to shop shoes, clothing, accessories, and more. However, in 2015, Simpson made a deal with Sequential Brands Group Inc. with the expectation that their involvement would help expand her line. Instead, Sequential soon found itself in deep financial trouble, directly affecting not only Simpson’s business but also the public image of a company that she had spent years building.

So in 2019, being no longer a majority shareholder in her own company, Simpson decided to take back her name and fight to regain ownership of The Jessica Simpson Collection.

“It was a journey but I never lost faith in myself,” Simpson shared with me over Zoom last week from inside of her California home. “I never let fear come in, it was not invited! A lot of people around me are like, ‘Are you sure? Are you sure?’ And I was like if you’re not sure, you’re fired because that means you don’t believe in me and that means that you don’t believe in what I can do and my purpose. I know that it’s going to be okay, even if I drained my bank accounts and don’t have a working credit card or whatever it may be. I chose to invest it all in myself for my children’s future.”

After two years of negotiations, Simpson re-acquired full ownership of The Jessica Simpson Collection with her mom Tina, a victory that has led to even greater public interest in her company, according to Simpson.

It opened up so many doors and we got the calls, like people just wanting to work with us because all of a sudden, it was like a powerhouse female-led brand. We literally carried the brand through the pandemic and saw our sales go up and that was obviously rare, but people were reading the memoir [Open Book] and timing just works out when you have faith in yourself and you listen to your intuition and your gut and you really know yourself.”

Over recent years, The Jessica Simpson Collection has been credited as a multimillion dollar company, while others before have reported that all of its merchandise has been collectively valued at $1 billion. So, I decided to go right to the source and ask Simpson where her company financially stands today.

I mean, you’re very close (laughs) but the thing is, we’re in the licensing business, so it’s different than like fast cash. I get a percentage off of the people that make it, so all of our licensees. So, I don’t have a billion dollars, unfortunately, but what I did have I drained in and bought myself back with. Talk to me in a couple years and I can guarantee you I have that money. It’s about manifesting, you know, and just really about believing that you can do anything.”

Having Simpson back in the driver’s seat with The Jessica Simpson Collection, I wondered what has been her favorite part of continuing to lead her own business and be her own boss.

“My favorite part is not having to answer to anybody. I still answer to my mom, even though I’m her boss (laughs). She’s still my mom. We have a very good working relationship. If I have an idea, she can run it! She can just make it happen and it’s really awesome.”

With the ongoing sales success of The Jessica Simpson Collection, including the recent debut of the Spring 2022 Collection, I decided to ask Simpson if she had anything to say to the many consumers around the world, people who continue to buy from her brand and support her business.

“Without the consumer, I am nothing. I’m just a mom and like a wife, which is fine, but everybody has given me a reason to stay and everybody has given me a reason to work harder, whether it’s negativity or positive, everything is a driving force and I appreciate people that aren’t even fans but like the clothes, you know? You don’t have to like my voice or you could find me super annoying, that’s fine, but you do like my shoes, I know you do!”

Married to former NFL player Eric Johnson and a mother of three, Simpson has big plans to see The Jessica Simpson Collection expand into new areas of fashion and lifestyle, inspired by some of the most important people in her world.

“We are going to go into boys and men, as well. That’s definitely something I’ve always wanted to do. I have a son, so that makes it really easy. It’s a lot of dry-fit, things that they will feel comfortable in. For my husband, it’s always about easy, relaxed, and I want to be able to give that to men, as well. We’re going to be going into home interior, that type of stuff, which is exciting. I really want to get into health and wellness.”

Simpson also deals with the seasonal issues that many parents face with their children’s allergy symptoms, which is why she has teamed up with Flonase to get the word out that relief does in fact exist.

“I didn’t know the difference between sickness and allergies because the symptoms are so similar and once my kids started to sneeze and out here in Los Angeles, it’s really bad because of the wildfires and climate change and pollen – name it. We already used Flonase, so it was such a natural thing to be able to talk about because my kids now only want to play outside, so it has changed their life and they’re much happier. A lot less complaining and a lot less snot (laughs).”

Simpson goes on to tell me that she is well-aware of the downfalls to being a public figure, which has led to her being on the receiving end of backlash and criticism, particularly about her body. She says that she sets small goals for herself and when she achieves the big goals, she always seems to reach them sooner than she had expected.

“There’s little things in my life that I can’t let people’s judgments stand in the way of because there is somebody out there that is going through what I’m going through. Yes, I’m going through it publicly but I’ve learned to really accept that and not read those comments, because if I did that, if I let other people’s judgments dictate my next decision, you wouldn’t have what I know I can offer.”

Beyond her business focus with The Jessica Simpson Collection, the fashion mogul has already been dabbling back into her music roots, even putting out a cover to the song “Particles” last year on her YouTube channel, proving that her vocal range today is just as powerful as it has ever been.

“It’s always something that I’m working on. On my Voice Memos [on my phone], I have all my vocal lessons. I tape them, so I make sure to keep that muscle strong because I know that’s my God-given gift and that’s what got me into the doors that I’ve walked through and it’s always going to come back to my voice.”

When I asked Simpson if her longtime music fans can expect more from her ahead, she quickly responded with, “Absolutely! I want it just as bad as a fan, trust me. When you don’t have a record label, I didn’t realize when I got dropped from my record deal, that I actually wouldn’t have a record deal again. I didn’t think to go out and shop it because everybody was signing 360 deals and I already had the Collection and there was no way that I was going to give a record label a percentage of that. They didn’t create that for me. I did that because I put my life out there on a reality show. I was brave enough to do that. I just think that no matter what we do in our lives, if we hold strong to our purpose, we’ll always go back to who we really are and for me, that is a singer.”

As I wrapped up my conversation with Simpson, I wondered how her business mindset and her mindset in general as an evolving person is changing as time goes on.

“I think that we rely on ourselves and not others. I think that we learned that our opinions are what’s right for my name, because so many people can tell you what success is or what will make you successful or how to dress to be approachable and stuff like that. I’ve always been the type that’s honest, open, and relatable because I mean, with pregnancies, like I’ve gained 100 pounds three times and lost it, you know?

I’m a determined spirit and I want to instill that in my children and I want to instill that in people who watch my career. For me, back in the day, I was all about Oh gosh, how many spins is my record going to get? Are they going to get mad at me? I was always afraid that I wasn’t doing it well enough, but that was to their standards. My standards, I’ve realized, are the right ones because I know myself and I know what I can give people and I know what I can give to the world and it inspires me to inspire people. Honestly, it keeps me happy and sane, the more I do.
