Does insurance cover the cost of breast augmentation?

If the breast augmentation surgery is performed for aesthetic reasons, health insurance will not cover the expenses. However, if the surgery is to improve the person’s life, insurance may cover the cost of breast augmentation. As always with insurance coverage, certain conditions must be met depending on the insurance provider.

1. Congenital asymmetries

It is normal and natural for women to have a certain asymmetry between both breasts. However, if this asymmetry is considerable, people can suffer from back pain. Depending on the case, the patient can undergo a breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery. Most health insurances cover part of the costs of the surgery!

2. Malformations

Asymmetry is one type of malformation. However, there are more serious types of malformation such as amastia (lack of mammary gland), macromastia (imperfect breast development), or atelia (disappearance of the nipple). In all these cases, insurance can also cover part of the costs of the breast surgery.

3. Breast cancer

In the case of breast cancer, insurance will assume the costs of the surgery. Tumors are removed in surgery and the breast is reconstructed with a silicone implant. This surgical procedure is known as a mastectomy, which goes hand in hand with reconstructive surgery that helps the breast regain its natural appearance.

Is a Mommy Makeover for You?

Pregnancy and breastfeeding can change your body in ways that you didn’t expect. Loose skin and weakened abdominal muscles often remain even if you follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Moms who breastfeed their children often lose breast volume and are left with deflated, sagging breasts. Sometimes stubborn pockets of fat remain, especially around the abdomen, hips, and thighs.

If you are self-conscious about your post-pregnancy body and no longer enjoy wearing bathing suits or fitted clothing, a mommy makeover may be an excellent option. A good mommy makeover candidate:

Is at or near her target weight

Maintains a reasonable level of fitness

Makes healthy eating choices

Has quit smoking

Mommy makeover surgery is becoming popular because it addresses a number of concerns in a single operation. That offers patients a number of benefits compared to having several separate procedures. Those advantages include:

A single recovery: With a mommy makeover, you only need to arrange for time off work, household help, etc. one time. Your discomfort and recovery period will be consolidated, rather than spread out and prolonged.

Your satisfaction: Most patients enjoy the feeling of seeing the physical improvements all at once, rather than spread out over several procedures.

Mommy Makeover Recovery

A Mommy Makeover is an outpatient procedure, performed at Macleod Trail Surgical Centre, our state-of-the-art, fully accredited, private surgical suite. The facility is adjacent to our office and is fully accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. The duration of the surgery depends on the procedures performed and the extent of the correction required. After you’ve recovered from the general anesthesia – typically two hours after surgery – you will be discharged to the care of a friend or loved one, who should stay with you overnight. You will receive detailed post-op instructions to make your recovery as comfortable as possible.

Everyone’s experience is different, but in general, Mommy Makeover patients take about two weeks off from work in order to get their healing well underway. You will wear a compression garment for several weeks for support and to help with healing, and you will be advised to keep your activity level light to moderate. Your surgeon will advise you as to when you can resume exercise and other more strenuous activities.

We encourage communication with our office in order to maximize comfort and clarify any uncertainties.
