Is Face Fillers Haram

Is face fillers haram? The answer to this question is not as simple as you might think. While some scholars believe that the procedure is impermissible, others say it’s permissible—and those who say it’s okay often cite the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), where he said “You should come close to your wives and share their beds.”

On the other hand, some scholars have argued that it is not justifiable because of its non-medical nature. However, a more detailed analysis of both sides of the argument reveals that face fillers are indeed permissible in Islam if used for medical purposes—and even if they’re not necessarily medically necessary, there are ways to use them in a way that will still be considered halal by Islamic scholars.

Is Face Fillers Haram

This is a question that I have been asked on more than one occasion by some of my Muslim patients. It got me thinking and I started to do my own research which led to me writing an article on this topic which was published in Aesthetics Journal.

It is not surprising to learn that within Islam focusing on external beauty should not be a goal in itself and I am sure this is something common to all faiths. Rather inner beauty and good conduct towards others are favoured. During my research I learnt that permanently changing one’s appearance could be viewed as changing God’s creation and is generally considered not permissible but, even in this regard, there are some exceptions; for example surgery to correct congenital deformities.

I have seen Muslim clients who feel comfortable with having non-surgical treatments with dermal filler and BOTOX® as it is temporary and they therefore do not see that they are making a permanent change to themselves. Also the vast majority of hyaluronic acid fillers do not contain anything which could be deemed haram i.e not permissible. It is important that you check this with your practitioner if you have any concerns.

Botox®, Azzalure and Bocouture are all different brands of anti-wrinkle injections and there are also no animal-derived by-products in these products. They do all contain albumin however which is a protein that is generally considered non-permissible to some.

Ultimately people need to do what they feel comfortable with. In some cases that means having treatment and in other it means waiting or seeking further advice from family, friends or Islamic scholars.

What other types of dermal filler exist?

Some fillers are made from substances not found naturally in the body. These include products such as Radiesse® and Sculptra®, which, again, can result in redness and bruising at the injection site. They tend to last much longer than hyaluronic acid fillers, but they cannot be dissolved, so if you don’t like the effect, removing them is more difficult.

Finally, you may have heard of collagen fillers. These aren’t widely used at all anymore, primarily due to the fact that most were derived from cow collagen, and often produce allergic reactions.

One other thing…don’t be afraid to make sure your practitioner is using CE or FDA-approved products. Ask to see the packaging and product, ask them questions about it. Google it if you have to! You’re the patient, you are in control.

There are lots of imitations on the market and you DO NOT want these in your face, but it would be extremely rare and unusual for any of the medical professionals on Glowday to be using unlicensed products. If we found out they were, they would be instantly removed from our platform.

Pay for the skill, not the ml

Prior to any filler treatment, you should have a face-to-face consultation with a medically qualified, appropriately trained and registered practitioner who is able to safely carry out the procedure. She or he will advise you on the amount of filler required and will usually recommend starting with small doses first.

I know we keep banging on about it, but please choose a medically qualified practitioner! They will know exactly where to inject to ensure safety, and, should anything unexpected occur, they will be able to quickly resolve any complications.

So, what’s the take-home message about fillers?

That you shouldn’t fear them! They are fanbloodytastic!

Fillers are an incredible tool to pause Old Father Time and his impact on facial volume loss. They are also amazing for sorting out crooked noses (non-surgical nose jobs), dark eyes (tear trough) jawlines (jawline filler – AKA jawline augmentation) and thin lips (lip fillers) – BUT only when administered by medically qualified, highly experienced, aesthetic professionals.

What happens when fillers wear off

Do Fillers Stretch Out Your Skin?

If you are getting weary of wrinkles and other signs of age on your face, then you may want to opt for a filler injection. Fillers help to reduce wrinkles and fine lines while simultaneously giving aging skin youthful volume, helping you to look your best. However, some patients at Siti Med Spa in San Diego have recently been concerned that fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane may permanently stretch out their skin, so we have to clear up some misconceptions.

PATIENT’S CONCERNS ABOUT FILLERS

First, let’s outline the concern patients are expressing. Restylane and Juvederm fillers are injected into your face or a different area of the body, adding volume to your face. Patients are afraid that once the filler wears off, the skin will sag because the volume added may have stretched the skin out. This could possibly lead to additional wrinkles and sagging skin that will leave you looking worse than when you first came in for fillers.

DO FILLERS STRETCH OUT YOUR SKIN?

When a filler is injected, it does stretch the skin slightly, filling out sagging skin and tissues that have been weakened over time. However, in most cases, after the filler fades away the skin will recover and revert to the way it looks when you came in. In some situations, depending on the type of treatment, your skin will look even better! For some fillers, such as Restylane, a big part of the procedure is working to stimulate the production of collagen in your skin.

COLLAGEN PRODUCTION FROM FILLER INJECTIONS

Some fillers lead to an increase in the body’s natural production of collagen, which will have a positive impact long after the filler has faded away. Collagen is a protein that improves the elasticity and hydration of your skin, along with fighting wrinkles and other signs of age. By increasing your collagen levels, these fillers can see your skin looking better for years after your initial injection.

FILLERS WILL NOT STRETCH OUT YOUR SKIN

No matter what you hear, a majority of the time fillers will have no kind of lasting effect on your skin. You will not require more filler in the future for the same results, and your skin will not sag more because you opted for the fillers. However, if you have these questions or concerns, make sure to voice them to your physician so they can fully inform you of any risks.
