Big Nose After Rhinoplasty

Clinical trials have highlighted the dramatic transformation resulting from rhinoplasty. The procedure can help you achieve a smaller, more refined nose that fits your facial structure. However, some patients may experience a bump on their noses after rhinoplasty.

When you undergo rhinoplasty, there are times when the nose looks longer after the surgery. This can be achieved through various procedures, but a fundamental requirement is that the nostrils need to be inverted in order for this side of the work to be successful. In this guide, we review the aspects of Big Nose After Rhinoplasty, why does my nose look longer after rhinoplasty, bulbous nose tip after rhinoplasty cost, and nose bridge wider after rhinoplasty.

Big Nose After Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that changes the shape and appearance of your nose. The surgery can be performed to correct problems with breathing and nasal obstruction, but it may also be done for cosmetic reasons. Rhinoplastic procedures have been around for centuries and have evolved over time. Today, rhinoplasty techniques are less invasive than in years past—allowing recovery times to be shorter and more predictable than they used to be. There are many different types of rhinoplasty procedures available today, including traditional open-nose rhinoplasty (surgical scars visible on the outside), closed-nose rhinoplasty (surgery is performed through the nostrils without any visible scars on the outside), endoscopic rhinoplasty (surgery performed through small incisions inside nostrils), minimal invasive rhinoplasty (scarring is minimized by using instruments inserted into nostrils) or hybrid approach which combines two or more methods above). Here we will discuss what happens during a typical operation as well as some common side effects experienced after surgery such as swelling or skin discoloration

Swelling is a side effect of surgery.

Swelling is a normal side effect of rhinoplasty. Swelling can last for several weeks, or even months, and it’s important to keep this in mind when deciding whether you want to have surgery.

There are ways to control the swelling after your surgery. You may need to use ice packs on your nose and take medication called antihistamines (for example, Benadryl). Avoid alcohol and caffeine while you’re recovering as these can cause increased blood flow near the area where they’re consumed by your body, which can increase swelling in that area as well.

If you notice more than just mild swelling after surgery (a lot of people do), try some simple exercises: lie down with both arms straight above your head; raise one leg at a time up over the edge of the bed or couch until it reaches about 90 degrees (or as close as possible); hold each position for five minutes before switching sides; repeat three times per day until symptoms subside completely

The nose will continue to change after the initial surgery.

The nose will continue to change after the initial surgery. The changes are subtle and will depend on your own facial features, but they do occur over time.

The nose will continue to change shape over time due to aging, gravity and lifestyle habits (for example: smoking). It’s important that you understand this so you don’t get discouraged by any minor changes that occur after rhinoplasty surgery.

The swelling from your procedure will subside within 2 weeks but may take up to 3 months for full resolution of all postoperative swelling in most cases of rhinoplasty surgery performed by a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon or otolaryngologist such as Dr [name].

Rhinoplasty results may not be noticeable right away.

  • The nose continues to change after the initial surgery.
  • Your nose will change shape over time due to aging, gravity and lifestyle habits. For example, if you smoke or are overweight, this can affect your nose’s shape by causing it to droop slightly over time.
  • Swelling also affects how your new nose looks at first–and swelling can last for weeks or months after surgery! A lot of patients report that their noses look bigger when they’re swollen than they do once the swelling subsides (this is because of something called “tissue retraction”). This means that even if a patient has an ideal result on day one post-op, there will still be some changes that occur as a result of swelling during recovery periods following rhinoplasty procedures.* Skin tone will also affect how much change occurs in overall appearance of the face after rhinoplasty surgery has been performed

Changes in skin tone can affect the appearance of rhinoplasty results.

Changes in skin tone can affect the appearance of rhinoplasty results. Skin tone changes over time, and is affected by many factors including aging, gravity and lifestyle habits such as sun exposure. Darker skin tones tend to be more prone to hyperpigmentation (a darkening of the skin) after rhinoplasty surgery because they absorb more ultraviolet radiation from sunlight than fair complexions do. This may cause your nose to appear darker or redder than it did before surgery if you have a darker complexion before your procedure. The best way to avoid this problem is by taking precautions against overexposure to the sun after surgery until healing has occurred completely–usually about six months later for most patients who have undergone cosmetic procedures on their faces or necks.”

The nose changes shape over time due to aging, gravity and lifestyle habits.

The nose changes shape over time due to aging, gravity and lifestyle habits. The most common reason for a change in your nose’s shape is aging. As you get older, the cartilage that helps give your nose its structure will start to break down.

The second most significant factor is gravity: it pulls down on your face and causes the skin surrounding your eyes (and mouth) to droop over time. The third reason why noses can change after rhinoplasty surgery is due to lifestyle habits like smoking or drinking alcohol excessively which can cause collagen breakdown in skin tissue over time as well as increase swelling around the eyes (which makes them look puffy). Other factors include sun exposure which causes premature wrinkling of facial features; trauma such as automobile accidents where trauma could result in broken bones or fractures; infections such as colds/flu viruses spread through sneezing attacks etcetera…

Rhinoplasty patients should wait at least one full year before considering revision rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty is a very challenging procedure. It’s not a quick fix, and it can be expensive. You should wait at least one full year before considering revision rhinoplasty.

This is because the nose has many blood vessels, nerves, and cartilage that need time to heal after surgery. If you have an infection or any other complication during this period of healing–especially if it’s severe enough for antibiotics or other treatments–it could cause permanent damage to your nose.

why does my nose look longer after rhinoplasty

After your nose job (rhinoplasty) procedure, swelling of the nose and face is normal and can initially make your nose appear larger. For the first two weeks post-op, the swelling will be quite noticeable. But after the second week, swelling usually subsides and becomes much less obvious. However, the nose can still look a bit “puffy” for several months. By four months post-op, the majority of swelling should dissipate, but it can actually take a full year for all of the swellings to subside allowing you to see the final, true result of your nose job.

Supratip Swelling After Rhinoplasty

Fullness or a bulbous appearance, specifically, of the nasal tip following the rhinoplasty surgery is a complication that can be very disappointing. Fullness over the nose tip is termed “supratip fullness” and can cause the tip of your nose to look like it is drooping, much like a parrot’s beak. The first Dr. Laguna checks are that your surgeon did, in fact, place your nose tip in the proper position.

Proper Positioning of the Nasal Tip During Rhinoplasty

An aesthetically pleasing nose tip should be positioned to lead the dorsum (the external ridge of the nose) by about 1 to 2 mm. Tip support must be appropriately provided so that it maintains its position. An adequately positioned nasal tip resulting from a rhinoplasty that continues to appear droopy well after swelling has subsided due to fullness above the tip is classified as supratip fullness complication. Several factors can lead to this problem, thereby compromising the ideal aesthetic of your nose.

Under resection of the septum just behind the tip

The septum is the wall between your nostrils and acts as the primary central pillar support to the nose. Often, during the rhinoplasty procedure, areas in the septum are removed to eliminate any deviation affecting your breathing. Despite removing septal cartilage, experts must preserve a good amount of septum to maintain the infrastructure support of the nose. This is especially important in the front of the nose, where the nasal tip is often supported on the most projected portion, called the anterior septum. Yet, an area just behind this region needs to be lowered, or it will remain prominent and lead to the supra tip deformity.

Soft tissue fat of the nasal skin

Often nasal skin is fatty, and if not addressed, this fat can blunt the shape of the nasal tip despite surgical maneuvers to refine it. In addition, this fat can fill the area behind the tip resulting in supratip fullness. Ensuring a well-defined nasal tip requires proper defatting of the supratip region during the rhinoplasty procedure.

Memory of the skin shell

The skin of the supratip region often stiffens to a fuller convex-shaped shell over decades of life. Despite removing the underlying structures that have created a fuller supratip region, the skin might not accommodate the new shape. Such cases may require light scoring of the under-surface of the skin. Additionally, during the rhinoplasty procedure, a small internal stitch may assist in pulling the supratip skin down to its newly designed contour. Finally, aggressive taping and an external splint further assist in reforming the shape of the supratip skin shell.

bulbous nose tip after rhinoplasty cost

A bulbous nose is when the tip of the nose is enlarged. It typically has a round appearance and is a result of genetics. However, some people develop a bulbous tip due to injury or aging. A bulbous tip is caused by weak or poorly defined cartilage and thick skin.

The nose is a central feature of the face but the tip of the nose should never be the focus. A bulbous tip often disrupts facial balance and can cause feelings of self consciousness.

Can Rhinoplasty Fix a Bulbous Tip?

Rhinoplasty for a bulbous nose can help get your confidence back and improve your facial appearance. Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a procedure that reconstructs the nose. For patients with a bulbous nose, this type of plastic surgery is specialized to reshape the nose which will help define the nose and reduce the appearance of a bulbous tip.

Bulbous Tip Rhinoplasty Procedure

Bulbous tip rhinoplasty can look slightly different in procedure based on your physiology. One technique used for this type of rhinoplasty is to remove cartilage from the nasal tip. Dr. Dominic, your plastic surgeon, will remove the cartilage and then reshape the remaining cartilage for a more aesthetically pleasing nasal tip.

Another approach for bulbous tip rhinoplasty is to create a more defined tip with sutures. For more specifics on what your rhinoplasty procedure will look like, schedule a consultation with Dr. Dominic. During your free consultation, Dr. Dominic will help create a unique plan for your aesthetic needs and desires.

Open or Closed Rhinoplasty for Bulbous Tip?

There are two main types of rhinoplasty: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. These two types of rhinoplasty are different in where the incision is made and how the procedure is completed. An open rhinoplasty is done for more advanced refinement while a closed rhinoplasty is done for minor tweaks to the nasal tip. Below we discuss which procedure is right for your bulbous nose rhinoplasty.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is done for more advanced refinement. This type of rhinoplasty allows for better access and visibility during surgery so more cartilage can be removed and the nose tip can be more accurately shaped. During an open rhinoplasty, an incision is made on the columella, the tissue in between the nostrils. Additional incisions may be made within the nostrils. However, you don’t need to worry about scarring because the skin will heal over time and the scar should fade until it’s not noticeable.

If your nose requires a more complex procedure, an open rhinoplasty is the right choice for you.

Closed Rhinoplasty

A closed rhinoplasty is often used for more minor, less invasive procedures. All incisions are made within the nose, one in each nostril. This type of rhinoplasty is guaranteed to have no scarring, shorter swelling and recovery time, and a faster operation.

To determine which type of rhinoplasty is best for your bulbous nose, talk with your plastic surgeon. They will discuss the best approach to achieving the facial appearance you desire. During your consultation with Dr. Dominic will help you decide which procedure is best for your physiology and your desired results.

Bulbous Nose Rhinoplasty Cost

A typical bulbous tip rhinoplasty cost is from $7,000 to $12,000. This price typically includes anesthesia and operating costs. Rhinoplasty for a bulbous tip will range in cost depending on the complexity of the procedure. For a more specific cost for your bulbous nose rhinoplasty, schedule a consultation with your plastic surgeon.

Bulbous Tip Rhinoplasty Results

When Will I See Rhinoplasty Results?

After having a bulbous tip rhinoplasty, you could begin seeing results by week 2 to 3. However, swelling and bruising takes several months to heal. Some residual swelling may even last up to a year which means that you may not see the final result of your rhinoplasty until a year after your procedure. Each patient is unique so your swelling may subside within a few months and you’ll be able to see the final result of your rhinoplasty sooner than a year.

How Long Will Rhinoplasty Results Last?

A bulbous tip rhinoplasty’s results are permanent. After your rhinoplasty you won’t need any follow up procedures to complete it. During the first year after your rhinoplasty, the tip of your nose may look different over time. This is due to recovery and your nose’s tip healing from swelling and bruising. At the one year mark you should feel confident that the nose tip you see is the permanent result of your bulbous nose rhinoplasty.

Bulbous Nose Rhinoplasty Recovery

During the first one to two weeks of your rhinoplasty recovery, you should rest and keep your head elevated. It’s best to avoid going to work or doing any strenuous activities. After the first week your stitches and stint will be removed and by week two the tape will also be removed. Swelling will linger for a few months but greatly reduce within the first month or two. Some residual swelling may last up to a year but it won’t be noticeable.

Tips for Reducing Bulbous Tip Rhinoplasty Recovery Time

Use Cold Compresses

Placing a cold compress on your cheeks can help to reduce swelling. Be careful not to place the ice pack directly on your nose as this could disrupt the stint and shift the bones or cartilage. When using a cold compress don’t let it rest against your skin for an extended period of time as this could also cause burning to the skin.

Elevate Your Head

When sleeping after your bulbous tip rhinoplasty, be sure not to rest on your side or stomach. Putting pressure on your nose could prolong recovery, increase bruising and swelling, and potentially shift the placement of your nose. It’s best to sleep on your back with two or three pillows or rest in a recliner.

Don’t Do Intense Exercise

While going for a walk and moving your body is a great way to help with recovery, overdoing it can be detrimental to your bulbous tip rhinoplasty recovery. Any large movements can increase swelling and any sports can put your nose at increased risk of injury and disrupted recovery.

Take Baths Instead of Showers

After your bulbous tip rhinoplasty you will be wearing bandages and stints around your nose that aren’t meant to get wet. During showers, the spray of water might also be painful against your nose. It’s best to take a bath until you get your stint and bandages are removed around one week after the procedure.

nose bridge wider after rhinoplasty

When we perform a rhinoplasty we lift the skin off of the infrastructure, which is the cartilage in the bone. After we change that infrastructure, we re-drape the skin. The new contour emerges as the nose heals, but right after surgery the skin thickens and swells, particularly if the patient already has thick skin and big pores.

It can take a while for the skin to re-blanket the nose and for us to see the definition, especially if we are narrowing the tip. Because of that, the nose can look bigger. However, If the patient has thin skin and a very bony, structural nose, once we take down that structure, it immediately looks smaller.

How long does it take for your nose to look normal after rhinoplasty?

The time it takes for your nose to look normal after rhinoplasty depends on the structure of the nose, skin thickness, and what’s being done.

Not all rhinoplasties are the same. Some are first time rhinoplasties while some patients are on their first or second revisions. Some people have thick skin while others have thinner skin. Some patients are just looking for a tip revision while others have a bump on the bridge, a long nose, or wide nose. All of these factors contribute to the complexity of the surgery and the time to recover.

If a patient is having a revision rhinoplasty, the skin will thicken more post-surgery than it did after their primary rhinoplasty. That being said, it typically takes longer to see final results after a revision rhinoplasty. A patient with thick skin is coming in for tip definition, they won’t see results right away, whereas a person with a long bony nose will see changes rather quickly, even though the final result is not apparent yet.

When should I consider revision rhinoplasty?

Since it takes 12 to 18 months to see the final results from a rhinoplasty, and since the nose changes even more after that, you shouldn’t consider a revision rhinoplasty before a year to a year and a half. When I see a nose where too much cartilage has been removed in a prior surgery, I realize that this nose can continue changing for several years.

Because the nose continues to change, a second surgery can be avoided if the patient waits to see if they like their final result. On the flip side, some patients might be initially happy with their nose job, but over time they become dissatisfied. The nose might look okay for a year or two after surgery, but as it contracts over the years, it can become pinched or overly upturned. That’s typically when I see patients, but sometimes people become impatient and if their nose is not perfect when the bandages come off, they are unhappy.

I just removed the split off of a patient’s nose, and as soon as they looked in the mirror they said, “I’m already considering a revision”. What? This patient had large pores and that larger pore formation is going to prevent the skin from shrinking and re-draping right away over the new nose structure. I made sure the patient knew this before surgery, but many times my words are forgotten during the excitement of a patient seeing their new nose for the first time, but it’s important to remember that the nose will continue to get smaller over time.

The most common question that you will see on the Internet from those who have had a rhinoplasty is, “It’s three weeks after surgery and my nose looks too big. Will it get smaller?” Yes, it will get smaller. Will it be exactly what they want? I can never say that for sure, but I do know that it’s going to get smaller. It’s going to wound-contract and the swelling is going to go away.

If you have an issue from a prior rhinoplasty and you’re not particularly confident in what’s going on, I’ll be glad to talk to you. You can call or email me any time. I help patients that have had prior nasal surgery all the time. Give me a call.
