Naturally, you have some concerns and questions about a mother makeover. This article will explain what a mommy makeover is and what you may anticipate from the process.
WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME FOR A MOMMY MAKEOVER?
In Pittsburgh, mommy makeover surgeries are best postponed until after you have completed your family. It’s best to hold off until you’re done nursing, as a breast lift might lead to bleeding that could be dangerous for the infant.

What To Anticipate
The following are common components of mommy makeover procedures:
Liposuction (Tummy Tuck)
Among the most common cosmetic surgeries for moms, a tummy tuck tightens abdominal muscles and removes stubborn fat and skin to give you a trimmer, more attractive silhouette. Liposuction may be used to remove stubborn fat deposits from the abdomen area before a stomach tuck is performed. Shelving and pouching of the stomach can also be corrected by excising excess skin.
Enhancement of the Breasts
You may be a suitable candidate for breast implants or a breast lift if you have lost weight after having a baby and your breasts are sagging or drooping. If you feel as though your breasts are excessively big, a breast reduction can be the best route to take.
Liposuction
Dr. Foley is skilled in performing liposuction on essentially any area of the body where pockets of fat have been identified. Liposuction may be included in the mommy makeover package if you have trouble shedding fat around your hips, thighs, stomach, arms, or elsewhere on your body.
How Much a Mommy Makeover Typically Costs
Given the individual nature of each Mommy Makeover, providing a ballpark estimate is next to impossible. One mother may simply be interested in a breast lift, but another may want additional procedures such as breast augmentation, a stomach tuck, and liposuction, all of which will increase the total price. The average cost for a breast augmentation for a woman is from $9,400 to $20,600, however this may vary greatly by the type of augmentation desired and the skill of the surgeon.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?
A mommy makeover is a newer term to describe a combination of cosmetic procedures that address common concerns following pregnancy and breastfeeding. Each of these components are considered “tried and true,” since they have a long, successful, and safe track record.
The joys and rewards of childbearing are often accompanied by effects on a woman’s body that are unable to be reversed by diet and exercise alone. Also known as post-pregnancy surgery, the mommy makeover procedure focuses on procedures designed to address the areas that are affected most dramatically with pregnancy and breastfeeding, specifically the abdomen and the breasts.
Many times pregnancy and breastfeeding will negatively affect the size and shape of the breasts, causing them to lose their youthful shape and firmness. Pregnancy may also result in stretch marks, as well as a loss of skin and muscle tone on the abdomen. There may also be persistent pockets of fat on your waist, abdomen, arms, or thighs that do not improve with diet and exercise.
Dr. DiBello and his staff are there to consult with you, listen to your needs or concerns, provide thorough answers, and always do it with the highest level of care and attention. A consultation with Dr. DiBello will help you determine if you are a candidate for a mommy makeover. At that time, Dr. DiBello will discuss his personalized approach to your surgery as well as important considerations involved in mommy makeover surgery.

Quick Facts
Treatment Options
Below is a list of the most common procedure women can mix and match for their Mommy Makeover.
Breast Augmentation
A breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that increases breast size with the use of silicone or saline breast implants. During pregnancy, your breasts naturally increase in size. After childbirth and breastfeeding though, the breasts lose volume; sometimes more than their breast size before pregnancy. Some women want to get back to the bust size they were when they were pregnant and breastfeeding. This can easily be accomplished with breast augmentation surgery.
Breast Lift
A breast lift is designed to lift and reshape your breasts by removing excess skin and optimally repositioning tissue. The breasts often lose volume after breastfeeding, leaving the breasts deflated or sagging. By performing a breast lift, the bust can be elevated to a more youthful position with improved contour. A breast lift will not increase the size of your breasts, so women who want larger, lifted breasts often opt to combine a breast lift with breast augmentation.
Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck consists of removing excess skin from the abdomen and tightening the abdominal muscles after having been stretched and separated from pregnancy and childbirth. Dr. Hamawy can perform a mini, full, or extended tummy tuck depending on the extent of the individual case. Tummy tucks are normally paired with liposuction in order to get the best results.
Liposuction
Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that removes excess fat deposits from problem areas on the body, creating a slimmer, more contoured appearance. This procedure is performed after diet and exercise have proven to be unsuccessful. Liposuction can be used on areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, upper arms, and neck. Normally, liposuction is added to a tummy tuck for optimal contouring.
Additional Options
Although the procedures listed above are the most popular Mommy Makeover options, there are additional options women can consider. The two most common additional options asked for are fat transfer and labiaplasty.
Fat Transfer
A fat transfer procedure involves removing fat from a problem area and transferring it to the part of the body where augmentation or added volume is desired. Liposuction is used to remove fat deposits from the specific areas; the fat is then injected into the area or areas lacking volume or contour. This also can be used as an option when considering a breast augmentation. In this case, the procedure would take the unwanted fat and inject it into the breasts, avoiding the use of implants. The Brazilian Butt Lift is another great example of a type of fat transfer that consists of injecting fat into the buttocks, giving you a more curvaceous appearance.
Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty, or surgical vaginal rejuvenation, is a procedure designed to shorten the length of the labia minora, making sure the tissue does not go past the labia majora. Reducing the size of the labia minora can prevent discomfort, such as the pulling or twisting of skin while performing physical activities like running or biking. Labiaplasties boost confidence in women, helping them to feel more confident and secure with their bodies.

Your Consultation
During your first visit, Dr. Adam Hamawy will examine and measure your breasts and abdomen considering factors such as breast sizes and shape, quality of skin, presence and degree of stretch marks, the amount of underlying fatty tissue, and the contour of your abdomen and body as a whole. Be prepared to discuss medical history such as prior surgeries, allergies, and current medications, vitamins, or other supplements that you currently take. You will be asked whether anyone in your family has had breast cancer and about the results of any mammograms. It is important for you to provide complete information. If you are a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking at least 3 weeks before your surgery. Dr. Hamawy is concerned about your health and safety and, depending on your medical status, may ask for additional evaluations before proceeding with surgery.
You will learn about the procedure, its limitations, and risks, and Dr. Hamawy will discuss your needs and concerns. He will explain which surgical techniques are most appropriate for you, based on your goals and your current body. Before you decide to have a Mommy Makeover, think carefully about your expectations and make sure you discuss them with Dr. Hamawy.
Surgery
Before surgery, you will be given medicine to lessen the anxiety and pain. General anesthesia is typically used, so you will be completely asleep. You will meet your anesthesiologist before your procedure and he or she will answer any questions you may have about your anesthesia. The surgery usually takes 3-5 hours. After surgery, you will awake in a recovery area where you will be closely monitored.
Surgery may be performed as an outpatient procedure at our certified ambulatory surgery center or at one of the several affiliated hospitals with an overnight stay. Whether you stay overnight or not be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home and stay to help you the first few days while at home.
Recovery
Initially, your scars will appear obvious to you. By three weeks, it will turn into a thin red line then slowly fade to a light brown or white line over the next several months. It is usually well hidden in your swimsuit or underwear.
Some discomfort or pain is normal following surgery. When you are discharged, you will be given prescriptions for pain medication. Your breasts and abdomen will feel very tight and you will walk stooped over for the first week, then slowly straighten as your skin stretches. You will wear a binder or compression garment for three weeks, day and night, following your surgery.
Most patients return to work after two or three weeks, however, plan on having limited physical activity and restrictions against exercise for at least six weeks. You may have drains that will require you to measure and record the fluid that your body expresses. These are usually removed in the office after five to seven days.
Your follow-up visits will usually start five to seven days following your surgery for a checkup and/or drain removal if necessary. During your postoperative visits, Dr. Hamawy will review activity limitations, incision care and concerns you may have. Following this visit, you will return in approximately 3 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and one year.

Which plastic surgeries are part of a Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover often includes one or more surgical procedures and non-invasive body contouring procedures to help restore a woman’s body to a more youthful, natural shape—giving Mom back the self-confidence she deserves.
A Mommy Makeover may include one or more of the following cosmetic plastic surgery procedures:
Non-invasive Mommy Makeover treatments
For some mothers, cosmetic surgery may not be an option. Available in Pittsburgh, non-invasive Mommy Makeover treatments are available that can improve the appearance of some common pregnancy-related conditions such as stretch marks, mild skin sagging, and the accumulation of cellulite.
Mommy Makeover cosmetic plastic surgery post-operative care
Mommy Makeover post-operative care will depend on the type of procedures performed. The post-operative recovery will vary from breast surgery procedures, liposuction, SmartLipo laser liposuction, and tummy tuck. No matter which type of surgery is performed, the surgical area will typically be swollen and sore with slight bruising for the first few days and possibly a week or longer. Pain medication and bed rest are prescribed for five to seven days following body-contouring procedures. After this time, patients may feel well enough to resume work and light daily activities.
Compression garments are usually prescribed for body contouring procedures and may need to be worn for two to three weeks following cosmetic plastic surgery to keep bruising and swelling to a minimum. In addition, heavy lifting and exercise should be avoided for up to four weeks.
Most Mommy Makeover patients are thrilled with the results. However, the healing process will continue for three-to-six months before the final result is seen.*
What if I have another child after Mommy Makeover?
Women considering a Mommy Makeover should be certain they are finished having children. Although it is not ideal, it is fine to have children following the surgery, however, the results from the surgery may be altered after giving birth. New stretching of the skin and abdominal muscle laxity may occur, the size of the breasts may change and new pockets of fat may appear. If necessary, another Mommy Makeover surgery could be performed.
How long do the results from a Mommy Makeover last?
The results from a Mommy Makeover are long-lasting, given that a healthy weight is maintained and there are no additional pregnancies.
How much does a Mommy Makeover cost?
The cost of a Mommy Makeover surgery will be determined during a private surgical consultation because each surgery is uniquely different. For example, one woman may be interested in a tummy tuck and breast lift, while another woman may benefit from liposuction surgery and breast implants.
Are there risks associated with cosmetic surgery procedures?
Men and women of all ages choose cosmetic surgery for a number of reasons and the process of deciding to have elective cosmetic plastic surgery is highly individualized and very personal. This decision can offer lasting improvement not only to an individual’s physical appearance but also to his or her self-confidence and self-esteem. However, choosing to have any type of elective surgery, including cosmetic surgery, is not without risk and potential complications.

About The Mommy Makeover Procedure
Giving birth can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a woman’s life. Unfortunately, pregnancy and breastfeeding often lead to unwanted changes in a woman’s body, as the skin stretches and sags and may not be able to return to its original shape.
There’s no denying that motherhood takes its toll on our bodies. From the lingering effects of childbirth to the stress and worry we put on it each day, a woman’s body changes as she matures into motherhood. But there’s no reason why our bodies can’t be restored to how they were before children. Cosmetic procedures are safer and easier than ever before, with some designed specifically to improve the natural changes of a mother’s body.
A mommy makeover is a combination of procedures designed to restore a woman’s body to a more youthful and firm state following pregnancy. Giving birth can be one of the most rewarding experiences in a woman’s life, but pregnancy and breast feeding can cause changes in a woman’s body to occur. The most common complaint following pregnancy is loose and sagging skin forming in multiple areas of the body. Given the stress on the female body, the skin can often be stretched beyond the point of natural repair. The skin can lose its natural skin elasticity causing the body to appear droopy or loose. I uses a number of procedures to correct these areas and restore the body to a pre-pregnancy state.
Since each woman’s body reacts differently to pregnancy, a mommy makeover is a highly individualized procedure that involves special attention to the individual circumstances of each patient. Mommy Makeovers by Dr. Koo take into account each woman’s individual concerns so that a personalized treatment plan can be developed. I take the time to discuss your goals for surgery so that you can achieve the precise results you desire through her experience, skill and dedication to her patients.
Body Procedures
Mommy Makeover Tummy Tuck
Perhaps nowhere else on the body is pregnancy more unforgiving than in the abdomen. By stretching and weakening the skin and muscles of the tummy and waist, pregnancy can leave you with loose skin, stretch marks and a straighter waistline that no amount of exercise will correct. A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, can help.
Tummy tucks help to flatten and shape the abdomen and waist by removing excess skin and tightening muscles. The result is a firmer tummy and more defined waistline. I have been performing abdominoplasties with excellent cosmetic results for many years, and customizes this procedure to fit each woman’s individual needs.
Women who also suffer from areas of fat in the abdomen or flanks after pregnancy may benefit from liposuction in addition to or instead of a tummy tuck.
Results from a tummy tuck procedure will likely diminish if women continue to bear children, so we advise patients who plan to become pregnant to delay abdominoplasty. This will ensure long-lasting results that help women look and feel their best as they raise their children.
Mommy Makeover Liposuction
New mothers may find that they have pockets of fat in the lower abdomen that do not respond to diet or exercise. They may also find that they have lost definition in their waistline. Women who had C-sections may also suffer from areas of fat hanging over their surgical scar. Each of these post-maternity body changes can be improved through liposuction.
Liposuction sculpts the body after pregnancy by removing undesirable, resistant fat from the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks and/or thighs. It offers the opportunity to slim and contour areas of the body that did not “spring back” to their pre-baby tone. With liposuction, you can minimize areas of fat caused by pregnancy and enhance the curve of the waistline.
There are several different methods surgeons use when performing liposuction, including ultrasound-assisted lipectomy (UAL) and suction-assisted lipectomy (SAL). In both types, fluid is injected into the area to be treated. Then a tiny incision is made in as inconspicuous a place as possible, and a cannula (small tube) breaks up the fat layer and suctions it out.

Breast Procedures
Mommy Makeover Breast Lift
Pregnancy can cause breasts to lose volume over time and become uneven. Nipples can begin to droop and areolas can stretch. A breast lift restores breasts to a more natural and youthful position on the chest.
A mommy makeover breast lift removes excess skin to restore the skin’s natural elasticity and tightens supporting tissues to achieve the desired contour. A breast lift does not directly impact the overall volume of the breast so many patients elect to combine this procedure with a breast augmentation or breast reduction to correct the volume of the breast. A mommy makeover breast lift can also reduce the size of the areola and reposition the nipples to a more youthful position.
Mommy Makeover Breast Augmentation
The aftermath of pregnancy can leave you with sagging and uneven breasts, lost breast volume, drooping nipples and stretched areolas (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). A breast lift, or mastopexy, is performed to reverse these changes and restore a youthful shape and lift to your breasts.
This is accomplished by trimming excess skin and tightening supporting tissues to achieve an uplifted, youthful contour. After a mastopexy, the breasts are higher on the chest and firmer to the touch. Breast lifts after pregnancy can also reduce areolar size and reposition downward-pointing nipples.
Your post-maternity breast lift will be tailored to you, depending on your individual case and goals. Breast size does not change after a breast lift, nor does the fullness or roundness in the upper part of the breasts. Women who desire larger, smaller or more rounded breasts may want to consider combining a breast lift with a breast augmentation or breast reduction.
Mommy Makeover Breast Reduction
During pregnancy, many women see an increase in the overall volume of their breasts. While many women see a dramatic decrease in breast size following child-birth, other women see the breast size stay relatively large. In these cases, women elect to undergo the mommy makeover breast reduction.
Breast reduction can relieve the common symptoms of large breasts, such as pain, improper posture, rashes, breathing problems, skeletal deformities and low self-esteem. A mommy makeover breast reduction removes fat and glandular tissue to reduce the overall volume of the breast.
Since large, pendulous breasts can often stretch the skin of the breast causing them to sag, many women choose to combine a mommy makeover breast reduction with a mommy makeover breast lift to achieve the desired results. Combined, these procedures delivers firm breasts in a more youthful position on the chest, alleviating any emotional or physical discomfort caused by overly large breasts.
