But, there are a few things you need to think about in order to get ready for breast augmentation surgery before you have it done. Any type of surgery requires a lot of effort. While our experienced staff at Toronto Plastic Surgeons will go above and beyond to make your experience as comfortable as possible, there are several things you can do in advance to make the procedure for breast augmentation even simpler.

When considering breast augmentation surgery, one of the most crucial factors to keep in mind is the recovery period that follows the procedure. The recovery period plays a significant role in the overall success and satisfaction of the surgery, as well as the final outcome of the breast augmentation. Understanding the duration of the recovery period and how it may vary from person to person is essential in selecting the right plastic surgeon for your needs.

On average, the recovery period for breast augmentation surgery can take around six weeks. However, it is important to note that this timeframe can vary depending on individual factors such as the patient’s age, overall health, and the specific techniques used during the procedure. Additionally, the recovery process may be impacted by the size and type of implants used, as well as any complications that may arise during or after the surgery.

During the first few days following the surgery, patients may experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the chest area. Pain medication and antibiotics may be prescribed by the plastic surgeon to help manage these symptoms and reduce the risk of infection. It is important for patients to follow their surgeon’s post-operative instructions closely to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.

In the weeks following the surgery, patients will gradually begin to resume their normal activities. However, it is important to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting during this time to prevent complications and promote proper healing. Patients should also attend follow-up appointments with their plastic surgeon to monitor their progress and address any concerns that may arise during the recovery process.

When selecting a plastic surgeon for breast augmentation, it is important to choose a board-certified surgeon with experience performing breast augmentation procedures. Additionally, patients should consider factors such as the surgeon’s reputation, surgical technique, and patient reviews when making their decision. By taking the time to research and select a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon, patients can ensure a safe and successful recovery following their breast augmentation surgery.

In conclusion, the recovery period following breast augmentation surgery is a crucial aspect of the procedure that should not be overlooked. By selecting a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon, patients can enhance their chances of a smooth and successful recovery, ultimately leading to a more satisfying outcome. Remember to consider all factors, including the recovery period, when choosing a plastic surgeon for breast augmentation surgery.

Dallas-based plastic surgeon Dr. Adams has given multiple presentations on the national level on this topic as well .

Breast Augmentation Recovery (Traditional)

Before we discuss the revolutionary new 24-hour recovery procedure that was pioneered by Dr. Adams, we want to share with you what the standard recovery process is like:

Immediate Post-Operative – Immediately after waking up from a breast augmentation procedure, you’ll find yourself groggy, sore, and maybe even feeling a bit “out of it.” This is the result of the anesthesia wearing off. It’s been likened to having a hangover. The effects will become diminished in a few hours after you’ve woken up.

The first 24 Hours After Surgery – The doctor will most likely have given you several prescriptions that could include antibiotics and narcotic pain killers. After the anesthesia has completely worn off, many women have reported that they start to feel pain in the immediate surgical area.

It’s suggested that patients have someone drive them back home once they’re discharged from the surgery office. Any prescriptions will also need to be filled at the pharmacy, which could mean another 30 minutes to one-hour wait. The doctor will have also given the patient an after-care checklist of the do’s and don’ts such as:

Three to Seven Days After Surgery – The first 72 hours are when patients feel the most pain. Depending on your level of pain sensitivity, the surgeon might offer alternatives to narcotic pain pills. Keep in mind that there can be dangerous side effects to taking these pills, including constipation, dizziness, and even addiction.

After the 7-day mark, most women can return to a semi-normal way of life, including a desk job. However, they are cautioned to keep physical exertion to a minimum until the surgeon feels that their bodies have healed enough.

It’s suggested that patients rest up on the couch or in their bed during this period. That means you’ll need to have a friend or family member take care of things around your house while you rest up and heal.

If you have a full or part-time job, it’s advised that you wait a bare minimum of seven days after the surgery; however, you might find yourself in mild to severe discomfort while sitting in an office chair for upwards of 8 hours a day.

Keep in mind that you cannot take narcotic pain meds while at work—this means that you’ll only be able to take over-the-counter pain meds. This is why many women who can afford it will take off three weeks to a month to fully heal up after the surgery.

Privacy is another concern. Many women don’t want their co-workers to know they’ve had breast augmentation surgery—as co-workers can and will gossip amongst themselves. For at least a week after the initial surgery, you’ll be required to wear a specialized bra, and your physical movements will be limited.

One to Six Weeks After Surgery – As the weeks start to progress, patients are encouraged to transition back into their regular routines slowly. Exercise should be light, and strenuous activities should be kept to a bare minimum.

Such activities as horseback riding, running, or any physical movement that could include a jarring up and down or side to side motion are discouraged as they could cause the implants to shift. At this point in time, over-the-counter medications can alleviate any lingering pain.

Full Recovery – When your surgeon sees you for the last time, he will assess how well your body has healed over the previous few weeks. It can take anywhere from six-to-eight weeks before your surgeon will give you the go-ahead to resume your normal lifestyle.

24-Hour Recovery

Dr. Adams believes the recovery post-surgery is one of the most important factors correlating to the quality of the procedure. This is why he help shape 24-hour rapid recovery breast augmentation procedure. He realized there was a better way to perform breast surgery that  relied on process oriented steps that maximized planning, minimized tissue damage and allowed patients to get back on their feet in as little as a few hours after waking up from anesthesia!

The secret to Dr. Adam’s revolutionary new technique is that he knows precisely where on the body to make incisions so that internal tissue damage is kept to a bare minimum. Unlike traditional breast surgery, where surgeons make relatively large incisions, the technique that Dr. Adams uses small cuts in strategic locations. This is what allows patients to return to their normal lives within a day—as if nothing ever happened!

Dr. Adams has given multiple presentations on his 24-hour recovery at the national level on this topic and published a paper as well (Tebbetts 2000, Adams 2008). He even performs live breast augmentation demonstrations to teach other plastic surgeons this amazing technique that allows women to return to their regular schedules without the need for potentially dangerous narcotic pain killers. Many of Dr. Adams’ patients who have undergone the 24-hour breast augmentation procedure can manage any lingering pain with over-the-counter painkillers.

About the 24-Hour Breast Augmentation Recovery

Post-operative pain can be a significant factor for patients undergoing breast augmentation. Dr. Adams has implemented several specific techniques that reduce tissue trauma to minimize post-operative pain and recovery, a considerable advantage to his patients undergoing this procedure.

These measures allow Dr. Adams’ patients a speedy recovery from breast augmentation with minimal post-operative pain. Dr. Adams is one of two surgeons (Tebbetts 2000, Adams 2008) who have documented this recovery in a peer-reviewed publication. Over 99% of Dr. Adams’ patients return to normal activities of daily living within 24 hours after the surgery.

You will be encouraged to use your hands and arms normally, including washing and styling your hair and raising your arms over your head the same day of the procedure. Dr. Adams has found the specific surgical techniques allowing this rapid recovery as the single biggest advance in the procedure and a major benefit to his breast augmentation patients. Patient references may be given to you during your consultation if desired.

how much do breast implants cost in canada

While it’s impossible to know at first glance exactly how much this procedure will cost for any one person, there are ballpark estimates available. For example, breast augmentation at Radiance Plastic Surgery can range in price from $8,500 to $10,000 CAD. But why such a broad range in pricing?

Breast augmentations can range in pricing due to many factors. Learning about these factors can help patients better prepare and plan for what could be one of the most life and confidence-enhancing procedures available, and everything that goes into determining the cost so that you can make the most informed decision possible.

Factors that determine breast augmentation cost

Type of breast implant There is a difference in cost between silicone implants and saline breast implants. Silicone implants are more expensive than their saline counterparts because it is more expensive to manufacture and distribute medical-grade silicone versus saline implants, which is comprised of sterile saltwater. Saline implants, as a result, are much cheaper to produce.

Geographical location Believe it or not, where you choose to have your surgery performed can have a big impact on how much you pay.

Typically, cosmetic plastic surgeries that take place in larger, metropolitan areas and cities, where the cost of living is much higher, will cost more than those that are performed in smaller cities and geographic areas. The higher cost of living plus a higher demand for these surgeries often translate into higher prices for almost everything. For example, a breast augmentation may cost more in Toronto, Vancouver, or Calgary than it does in Canmore.

Ultimately, it may be practical to plan to travel to a different city or state if there is a dramatic cost difference with a plastic surgeon you feel comfortable with.

Experience of the plastic surgeon Another factor that impacts the cost of a breast augmentation is the surgeon and facility you choose. Often, surgeons with extensive experience, significant credentials and specialized training will cost more than those with less experience or training. This is not to say that the most expensive surgeon is the best one for you, but it is common to see higher prices from Surgeons who charge more based on their level of expertise.

It’s important to remember that you should seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Michael Laliberte at Radiance Plastic Surgery, whose methods and aesthetic style match well with your goals. Breast augmentation can be a life-altering experience, so it’s always better to choose a surgeon based not just on cost, but experience and training.

gynecomastia surgery toronto cost

Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction surgery, is a procedure performed on men who have excess skin, fat, or glandular breast tissue. This condition can be caused by hormonal imbalances, genetics, obesity, or the use of certain medications. The main goal of gynecomastia surgery is to reduce the size of the breasts and create a more masculine chest contour.

One of the most challenging aspects of gynecomastia surgery is dealing with excess skin. In some cases, the excess skin may need to be excised to achieve the desired results. However, avoiding a long scar from skin excision is often a priority for both patients and surgeons. This can be achieved through careful planning and surgical technique, such as using a periareolar incision or liposuction to remove excess tissue.

In Toronto, the cost of gynecomastia surgery can vary depending on the extent of the procedure, the surgeon’s experience and reputation, the facility where the surgery is performed, and other factors. On average, the cost of gynecomastia surgery in Toronto ranges from $3,000 to $8,000. This cost typically includes the surgeon’s fee, facility fee, anesthesia fee, and any post-operative care.

It is important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience in performing gynecomastia surgery to discuss your goals, expectations, and concerns. During the consultation, the surgeon will assess your chest anatomy, skin elasticity, and overall health to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for you. They will also provide you with a detailed quote for the cost of the surgery and any additional fees that may apply.

Before undergoing gynecomastia surgery, it is essential to understand the risks and potential complications associated with the procedure. These may include infection, bleeding, scarring, changes in nipple sensation, asymmetry, and unsatisfactory results. It is crucial to follow your surgeon’s pre-operative and post-operative instructions to minimize these risks and achieve the best possible outcome.

In conclusion, gynecomastia surgery in Toronto is a popular procedure for men seeking to improve the appearance of their chest. The cost of this surgery can vary depending on various factors, but it is important to prioritize safety and quality when choosing a surgeon. By consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon and discussing your goals and concerns, you can achieve a more masculine chest contour and boost your confidence.

Who is a good candidate?

We often see 14 – 16-year-old boys with true (glandular) gynecomastia. Most often this problem resolves over one to two years once the hormonal transition of puberty is complete. Occasionally we will be asked to assess a boy who is psychologically and socially handicapped by their gynecomastia, and with the endorsement of a pediatrician we will offer surgery.

We see many men with gynecomastia secondary to use of anabolic steroids. We would not want to offer surgery to someone who remains on steroids, as they are more likely to have surgical complications from bleeding, they are likely to form further gland if they continue supplements, and it is difficult to predict the changes in breast development that will occur with discontinuation of the drug.

Pseudo-gynecomastia describes breast enlargement from fat excess. If you are somewhat over-weight, or previously were over-weight, excess skin and fat will be present. Special techniques are necessary to correct problematic gland, fat and skin excess.

Consultation essentials

It is important to bring your complete medical and surgical history to the consultation, especially drug history and any history of urology or endocrinology consultations. We will need to be sure you do not have an underlying hormonal abnormality to account for your gynecomastia. Previous imaging or biopsy reports are also helpful, especially if only one breast is involved (we would need to rule out breast cancer).

Alternatives to Surgery

Vests are available that will hide breast enlargement. Drug therapy (e.g. Tamoxifen) has been described, but does not seem to work once breast tissue is established.

Costs of Gynecomastia Surgery

Fees for gynecomastia surgery at our Toronto Cosmetic Plastic Surgery office (including facility and anesthetist) range from $3000 for ‘puffy areola surgery’ to $11,000 for mastopexy in massive weight-loss patients. A fee of $6500-7500 should be anticipated for most patients to cover liposuction, a necessary component for safe and effective gynecomastia surgery. Gland excision if necessary in addition to liposuction is covered by OHIP.

Preparation for surgery

We need you to be healthy and at a stable weight before surgery. We will provide written instructions on all necessary steps, supplies to obtain, etc. Dressings and compression vests are easy to apply by yourself.

The Operation

Small procedures can be performed under local anesthetic. Liposuction is used to reduce excess fat, and tunneling with the cannula is very effective for triggering a contraction of the skin of the upper chest to correct for loose skin. Gland is excised through a 1-2 cm incision that is hidden at the edge of the areola.

Rarely, if there is dramatic excess skin, this can be excised (mastopexy- see figure below).

Safety and Risks

Bleeding is a concern after gland excision, so chest movement should be limited (no arm or chest exercise) for 10 days following surgery.

Recovery process

Rarely is pain a problem after surgery. Dressings are easy to apply, and consist of pads secured by a compression vest. Most people will return to work within four days, and sports may be resumed at three weeks.

Results

You can expect to see positive effects from your surgery immediately post-op, but a final cosmetic result may not be evident until a year after surgery, once contraction is complete and scar redness has fully settled. Gynecomastia surgery is one of our most effective and gratifying surgical procedures.

We offer a complete armamentarium to correct your gynecomastia, and offer hospital surgery for patients with medical problems or other complexities that would benefit from over-night stay. Our expertise in managing major weight-loss patients has provided us great insight into managing excess skin problems. Come in for a consultation, and you will leave wiser, and perhaps scheduled for a rewarding transformation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gynecomastia caused by hormones?

Hormone imbalance is the main cause of gynecomastia. Hormones may be produced by the body in a combination that favours breast development, or drugs and supplements may be ingested that have a direct or indirect effect on hormones that cause gynecomastia.

Is gynecomastia dangerous?

The presence of gynecomastia requires investigation for causes of hormonal imbalance, and one-sided breast enlargement should be investigated to rule-out breast cancer.

Can gynecomastia go away with exercise?

Efforts to reduce breast gland, fat, and skin with local exercise will not succeed, and may even exaggerate breast prominence because enlarged pectoral muscles will make your breasts look bigger. Weight-loss will improve pseudogynecomastia if it is caused by excess body fat.

What kind of doctor does gynecomastia surgery?

Once a Family Doctor, Pediatrician or Endocrinologist has determined that there is no medical treatment that will correct gynecomastia, you should see a Plastic Surgeon with expertise in treating gynecomastia.
